Ambulance Billing Technician
The City of Bend is accepting applications for one (1) regular, full-time Ambulance Billing Technician in the Ambulance Billing Division of the Finance Department. This is an hourly, non-exempt (overtime eligible) position represented by the City of Bend Employee Association (COBEA). The City may use this job posting to create an eligibility list for future hiring purposes. The Ambulance Billing Technician plays a vital behind-the-scenes role in supporting emergency medical services for the City of Bend. This position helps ensure ambulance services are billed accurately and in compliance with state and federal regulations, supporting the Fire Department's ability to continue providing critical care to the community.
In this role, the person would be part of a small, collaborative, and supportive team where communication and teamwork are valued. The day-to-day work includes reviewing ambulance documentation, submitting insurance and Medicare claims, following up on payments, and providing helpful, respectful customer service to patients and insurance providers. This role works closely with Fire Department staff and teammates to resolve questions, improve processes, and ensure a positive experience for those navigating ambulance billing, all while contributing to essential City services.
What You'll Do
The following duties are a sample of major duties performed in this role and not intended to be an exhaustive list.
Reviews ambulance call documentation to make sure services are billed correctly.
Submits ambulance claims to insurance companies, Medicare, and other payers.
Follows up on unpaid or denied claims and works to resolve issues.
Answers billing questions from patients, families, and insurance providers with professionalism and empathy.
Assists patients with understanding their bills and navigating the appeals process when needed.
Enters and maintains accurate billing records in billing system.
Monitors deadlines and compliance requirements to ensure claims are filed properly.
Works closely with Fire Department staff to clarify documentation and improve billing processes.

The ideal candidate brings strong administrative or clerical experience along with a high level of attention to detail, accuracy, and work ethic. Team-minded and collaborative, yet comfortable working independently and managing their time effectively. Clear communication skills and a customer service mindset are important, as is confidence using computer systems. Prior experience with insurance or medical billing is a plus but not required; we can train the technical aspects of the job and certification can be obtained after hire. What matters most is reliability, precision, and being a great fit for a small, supportive team.

Education: Associate's degree in accounting, business, or related field; AND
Experience: At least 2 years of ambulance billing or similar experience, with at least one of those years being in a municipal government setting; OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Required Licenses & Certifications:
Current and valid Driver's license per City policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.
Must possess and maintain a current, active NAAC (National Academy of Ambulance Coding) certificate within six months of hire.
Desired (but not required) Attributes:
Prior experience in regulated administrative work, such as healthcare, government, finance, or insurance, where accuracy and compliance were critical.
Previous work involving insurance companies, claims processing, billing, or payment follow-up (medical or non-medical).
Experience working in a small team environment, where collaboration and independent workload management were both expected.
