Location: Long Island, NY
Schedule: On‑site initially; flexible hybrid after approximately 90 days
Overview
A strong, well‑established nonprofit organization is seeking a Controller to join its finance leadership team. This role reports directly to the CFO and plays a critical role in ensuring financial stability, improving processes, and supporting organizational leadership through accurate reporting and strong financial partnership.
The ideal candidate is a hands‑on accounting leader who combines strong technical expertise with a collaborative leadership style and the ability to work effectively across finance and program teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations, including month‑end close, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year‑end financial reporting
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis in partnership with senior leadership and program teams
- Oversee billing, grants, and contracts accounting, ensuring compliance with funding requirements
- Manage and continuously improve accounting processes, internal controls, and workflows
- Support financial systems, reporting tools, and ongoing system enhancements
- Partner with executive leadership on board reporting, audits, and strategic initiatives
- Lead, mentor, and develop a small accounting team with a focus on delegation and accountability
- Serve as a collaborative liaison between finance, program, and operational teams
Organizational Structure
- Reports directly to the CFO
- Leads a small team including grants/contracts and administrative or accounting support
- Part of a broader finance and accounting function that is evolving and being strengthened
Qualifications and Experience
Required:
- Proven experience at the Controller or senior accounting leadership level
- Strong foundation in month‑end close, budgeting, reporting, and internal controls
- Experience in nonprofit, human services, healthcare, or a related environment preferred
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, delegate effectively, and improve workflows
- Strong communication skills and ability to work cross‑functionally
Preferred:
- Experience with NetSuite or similar ERP systems
- Exposure to systems implementations or process transformations
- Experience with grant accounting and complex billing environments
- CPA or advanced accounting credentials a plus

Compensation and Benefits
- Base salary approximately $130,000
