Accounting Manager










Location: Grand Rapids

Reports To: Controller / Finance Leader


Position Summary


The Accounting Manager is responsible for leading day-to-day accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting. This role oversees the general ledger, month-end close, tax compliance, and internal controls while supervising accounting staff and partnering cross-functionally with operations and leadership.


The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, leadership experience, and a background in a manufacturing or distribution environment.




Key Responsibilities


Financial Reporting & Close Process




  • Lead and manage the month-end and year-end close process




  • Oversee preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations




  • Ensure accuracy of the general ledger and sub-ledgers




  • Prepare internal financial statements and management reports




  • Support external audit requirements and coordinate audit schedules




Operational & Technical Accounting




  • Maintain complex account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies




  • Ensure compliance with income, sales, and property tax requirements




  • Support annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes




  • Partner with operations leadership to provide financial insights and analysis




  • Research accounting issues and implement corrective actions as needed




Leadership & Team Development




  • Supervise and develop accounting staff




  • Establish performance metrics and expectations for the team




  • Provide coaching, training, and ongoing development




  • Drive process improvements and workflow efficiencies




Internal Controls & Compliance




  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls




  • Assist in development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures




  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards




  • Coordinate with HR on benefits-related financial responsibilities, including 401(k) oversight






Qualifications


Education & Experience




  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field




  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience




  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience




  • Experience in a manufacturing or distribution environment preferred




Technical Skills




  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting




  • Experience with ERP systems




  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
