Job Title
Vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Utilities Pipeline Maintenance.
Examples Of Duties
Under general supervision, drives tandem-axle commercial weight vehicles, tows construction equipment, and/or operates specialized equipment Drives tandem-axle trucks including dump, refuse collection packer, roll-off, water, flusher trucks, backhoe and medium size loader. Operates equipment on such trucks. Salts and plows roads during snow emergencies. Tows heavy construction and other equipment. Operates mechanical street sweeper to clean streets and gutters. Installs special adapters and fixtures to equipment as work requires. Performs preventive and routine maintenance as required on equipment and/or trucks. Makes minor repairs to equipment and helps mechanics with major repairs as required. Keeps simple records and logs. Participates in safety related training including confined space and trench working conditions and the handling of hazardous materials.
Examples Of Other Duties
Leads and instructs other workers. Operates less complex vehicles and equipment. Trains and assists in the operation of Heavy Equipment Operator level and unfamiliar Equipment Operator level equipment and vehicles. Performs various construction tasks and other related duties as required.
Qualifications
One year's experience in driving tandem-axle commercial weight vehicles or operating equipment as listed in examples of essential duties. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level): Knowledge of the operation and function of tandem axle commercial weight vehicles and attached equipment. Knowledge of maintenance requirements of vehicles and equipment. Ability to operate commercial weight tandem axle vehicles and equipment in a safe manner. Ability to use tools and other machines and equipment in a safe manner. Ability to make minor or routine repairs and adjustments to equipment and vehicles. Ability to follow instructions. Ability to read street signs and routine written material. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Full Performance): Knowledge of the operation and function of tandem axle trucks and specialized equipment associated with construction and maintenance of sewers, storm drains, and roads. Knowledge of applicable safety procedures. Knowledge of applicable County and departmental rules and regulations. Skill in the safe operation of assigned equipment and trucks. Skill in the safe operation of tools, equipment, and machines used on the job. Ability to apply acquired knowledge to increasingly varied and complex tasks. Ability to perform duties independently and as part of a team. Ability to train on equipment and vehicles of higher complexity. Ability to lead and instruct others. Ability to complete assigned tasks by established deadlines. Ability to complete simple forms. Licenses and Certificates Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver's license is required at the time of application. Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class A Maryland driver's license. (License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.) Possession of a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations is required at the time of application.
