Position Description
The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure is seeking a
Planner 1
for our Choose How You Move (CHYM) Transportation Planning group within the Engineering Department. This team is responsible for creating mobility plans, studies, projects, and programs, for advancing recommended improvements through scoping and conceptual design. The incumbent will be responsible for managing and supporting the development of policies, guidelines, and processes, and will also lead or assist in the coordination of regional planning initiatives. Performs related duties as required.
The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more. Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge. As an NDOT planner, you will be part of a team that develops plans and programs that guide the delivery of the department's projects and priorities.
Choose How You Move (CHYM), approved by 66% of voters in 2024, is Mayor O'Connell's transportation improvement program and the largest capital program in geographic scope and scale in Nashville's history. Implementation of the $3.1billion capital program requires extensive collaboration among multiple Metro departments, project managers, and vendors; coordination of $111 million worth of annual operating expenditures; and robust engagement with neighbors. CHYM will transform how people move around the city for decades to come.
CHYM is modernizing nearly 600 signalized intersections with smart technology, expanding transit with frequent, 24/7service and 54 miles of high-capacity All-Access Corridors, building 86 miles of sidewalks to complete the WalkNBike Priority Sidewalk Network, and making safety improvements along 78 miles of the Vision Zero High-Injury Network.

Typical Duties
Participates in CHYM planning and project development activities, including data collection, analysis, and report preparation.
Supports project managers in preparing project charters and advancing projects through the planning phase.
Assists in coordination with partner agencies, consultants, and community.
Participates in public meetings, workshops, and forums to support project managers and senior planners.
Prepares community engagement related materials.
Assists with scoping projects and reviewing plans for consistency with NDOT standards and CHYM team processes.
Tracks project timelines, deliverables, and budget information for assigned tasks.
Supports preparation of multimodal concept plans, corridor studies, and technical documents.
Assists in reviewing budgets, schedules, and deliverables for CHYM projects.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of planning experience
OR
Master's Degree in Planning or a related field from an accredited college or university
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Understanding of principles, practices, and trends in community and urban planning.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to community development and capital improvements.
Knowledge of best practices for safe systems/Vision Zero; shared mobility; walking, biking, and transit use; equitable community engagement; and transportation equity and mobility justice
