The Position
This is a limited continuous filing exam. Next filing cut-offs are at 5:00 pm on: 5/8/2026, 5/22/2026 (Final) Under direction, organizes, supervises, assigns and reviews the work of staff responsible for planting, removing, pruning, and caring for ornamental and shade trees and shrubbery; ensures work quality, and adherence to established policies and procedures.

Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, planning, scheduling, discipline, mentoring, and training; team dynamics and team building; applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; the names and characteristics of the more common types of ornamental and shade trees and shrubs in California; methods, equipment, and materials used in planting, cultivating, trimming, spraying, and general caring for ornamental and shade trees and shrubs and the ability to direct the performance of this type of work; pertinent safety principles and practices; efficient utilization of manpower, equipment, and materials; principles and practices of effective customer service.
Ability to select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff; plan, coordinate, assign, and review the work of subordinate staff; investigate and resolve disciplinary issues; work independently, prioritize work, coordinate activities and meet critical deadlines; develop and maintain cooperative, effective, working relationships with others; interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations; apply customer service skills, including the identification of customer needs and follow up to ensure customer commitments have been met; collect and compile a variety of data and information; handle public contacts with tact and judgment; compose special and routine reports and other written materials in a clear, concise, organized, and accurate manner; read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
Employment Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications Either: Two years of full-time paid experience employed by the County of Sacramento in the class of Tree Trimmer. Or: Three years of full-time paid experience planting, trimming, spraying, and caring for ornamental and shade trees and shrubbery, two years of which must have been in a lead worker or supervisory capacity. Note: If the word "experience" is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements. Desirable Qualifications The following credentials are desirable, but not required: Possession of a certificate from the International Society of Arboriculture; Possession of a current Qualified Applicator Certificate for the application of herbicides and pesticides from the Department of Pesticide Regulation, State of California. General Qualifications License Requirement: A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, is required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate California Driver License may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules or the applicable bargaining agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Physical Requirements: Positions in this class require the incumbent to be able to: Bend, stoop, kneel and crouch; Walk on uneven surfaces; Climb into and out of roadside ditches; Lift and carry up to 60 pounds without assistance; Use fall protection as needed, such as in an emergency or for training purposes; Drive for periods up to five hours cumulatively to worksites within the County. Individuals who do not meet these requirements due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Working Conditions: Positions in this class require the incumbent to be able to: Work outside in all kinds of weather and under hazardous conditions; Work around dust, dirt, noise, contaminated and non-contaminated water, chemicals, machinery and equipment with moving parts, moving repair and maintenance vehicles, traffic, fumes, and/or odors; Work night shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime and on-call. Probationary Period The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.
