Position Summary
The principal function of the employee in this class is to provide accurate readings and maintain water meters to ensure efficient operation. The work is performed under the direction and supervision of the Utility Technician Lead, but considerable leeway is granted for independent judgment and initiative. The employee establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the supervisor, colleagues, and the general public, performing duties outdoors in various terrains and weather conditions.

Essential Functions

Read meters and create accurate consumption records.

Ensure efficient operation of meters by performing routine maintenance, proofing readings, and checking for leaks.

Monitor meter conditions and report problems or deficiencies; replace damaged components such as meters, rings, lids, and tubs.

Install new meter sets for residential and commercial customers.

Maintain automated meter reading software and mass meter change‑out programs.

Respond to service orders for Utility Billing, including turning meters on/off for residents moving in or out and handling non‑payment shutdowns.

Respond to service requests for the Water Shop, turning meters on/off for repairs requested by customers.

Perform irrigation turn‑offs when appropriate.

Participate in on‑call duty (after hours, evenings, holidays, and weekends) on a rotating basis.

Assume additional responsibilities as required or assigned; attend meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions to stay current.

Communicate progress and issues to supervisors and relevant parties.

Respond to citizen questions and comments politely and promptly.

Coordinate regularly with others to maximize interdepartmental effectiveness and efficiency.

Required Education, Experience, & Licenses

High school graduate or GED (required).

At least 2 years of maintenance experience, or equivalent training and experience providing necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Computer skills – operate a computer using standard or customized software and learn new skills quickly.

Valid State of Idaho driver’s license; Water Distribution I license within one year of accepting the position.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge of city geography (GIS) and street locations.

Knowledge of plumbing operations and water meter installation and repair.

Basic mathematical computation skills.

Ability to use hand and power tools.

Diagnostic skills for equipment malfunctions.

Physical stamina for outdoor work in demanding conditions.

Accurate meter reading and simple mathematical calculations.

Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in an office environment; the employee is subject to indoor environmental conditions. The position requires work outdoors in various terrains and weather conditions.
