The Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Chelsea, formerly the Soldiers' Home at Chelsea, was established in 1882 and offers residential and long‑term care programs to eligible Massachusetts veterans. Our mission is to provide the highest quality personal health care services to Massachusetts veterans with dignity, honor, and respect.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

Consults with Director of Food and Nutrition Services and Dietitian to determine what is required to feed over 300 Veterans three meals each day, 7 days per week.

Reviews meal plans to establish how much food is needed.

Requisitions, receives, stores, and distributes foods, materials, equipment, forms, and supplies.

Uses state procurement system, COMMBUYS, to purchase all food, goods, and supplies for the dietary department.

Maintains inventory of food by maintaining electronic ledgers and logs of foods/supplies received by name, type, date, etc.

Reconciles inventory on hand with inventory needed and places orders with vendors through CommBuys.

Supervises the maintenance of a perpetual inventory and related records and anticipates future stock and supply needs.

Stores foods in appropriate locations (refrigerated or non‑refrigerated), in appropriate storage containers, and appropriately marks each.

Unpacks and examines goods to verify quality and quantity of stock.

Stores materials, equipment, forms, and supplies and replenishes depleted stock when necessary.

Makes daily inspection of stock to determine if there is spoilage, past due dates, etc., and removes from shelves and discards.

Supervises truck loading and unloading and assigns delivery routing of stocks and supplies.

Maintains the cleanliness and appearance of the stockroom.

Reviews records for accuracy of information, conforming to established procedures. When stock levels are being depleted, prepares necessary requisitions, including pricing.

Maintains file of related purchasing division awards.

Qualifications

Ability to make mathematical computations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) with speed and accuracy.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to work accurately with names, numbers, codes and/or symbols.

Knowledge of standard storekeeping methods and practices, including the receipt, storage, issuance and delivery of varied stock items including perishable goods.

Knowledge of the types and uses of materials for handling and storing hazardous products and fragile, durable and perishable goods.

Knowledge of standard procedures, methods and materials used in packaging materials and supplies for shipment.

Knowledge of the terminology, coding, symbols and standard abbreviations used in storekeeping.

Knowledge of the methods and procedures used for the security of property.

Skill in using small hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc.

Ability to explain the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in storekeeping work in a storeroom, stockroom or warehouse, the major duties of which included receiving, storing and issuing supplies and equipment.
