
Senior Geotechnical Engineer

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will support a diverse portfolio of public works, transportation, and commercial projects while serving in a key technical and leadership role. The position delivers geotechnical investigations and designs for foundations, excavation support systems, seismic and soil‑structure interaction analyses, hillside development, and related infrastructure. It includes project management responsibilities, technical oversight of reports and proposals, direct client interaction, and mentorship of engineering staff.
Responsibilities
Lead and execute geotechnical project assignments from inception through completion, including engineering analyses, report preparation, field exploration, and coordination of laboratory services.
Develop geotechnical design solutions for permanent and temporary excavation support systems and building foundations, ensuring safety, constructability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Perform and oversee seismic risk analyses and soil‑structure interaction analyses for a variety of infrastructure and hillside development projects.
Provide Senior‑level QA/QC review of technical proposals, calculations, and geotechnical reports to ensure accuracy, clarity, and fulfillment of commitments to clients.
Direct and develop proposals and presentations, contributing to business development activities and helping to secure new public works, transportation, and commercial projects.
Serve as project manager on assigned projects, managing scope, schedule, budget, and project deliverables while maintaining strong communication with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Supervise, mentor, and develop geotechnical engineering staff and technicians, providing technical guidance, feedback, and support for professional growth.
Coordinate field exploration programs, including planning subsurface investigations and interpreting geotechnical data for design recommendations.
Engage with clients to understand project objectives, present findings and recommendations, and build long‑term professional relationships.
Actively participate in professional and technical organizations to stay current with industry practices and enhance the firm’s technical reputation.
Utilize specialized geotechnical software and tools to perform analyses, prepare design calculations, and support the preparation of high‑quality deliverables.
Essential Skills
At least 5 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience, including work on public works and transportation projects.
Strong background in geotechnical engineering analysis and design, including investigations and preparation of foundation reports.
Proficiency in seismic risk analysis and soil‑structure interaction analyses for infrastructure and hillside development projects.
Proven project management experience, including managing scope, schedule, budget, and deliverables on geotechnical projects.
Experience providing QA/QC review of geotechnical reports, calculations, and proposals.
Ability to supervise, mentor, and lead geotechnical engineering staff and technicians.
Advanced degree in geotechnical engineering.
Active California Professional Engineer (PE) license.
California Geotechnical Engineer (GE) license or ability to quickly obtain the GE license.
Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing, presentations, and client interaction.
Ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast‑paced consulting environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience as a project manager on geotechnical projects involving public works, transportation, and commercial developments.
Familiarity with geotechnical software such as gINT, LPile, SlopeW, MathCAD, and CAD.
Experience processing and interpreting geotechnical and foundation reports for a variety of site conditions and structure types.
Active participation or interest in joining professional and technical organizations related to geotechnical and civil engineering.
Demonstrated ability to support business development through proposal preparation and client presentations.
Senior‑level expertise commensurate with years of experience and demonstrated leadership in geotechnical engineering.
