About the Role
The Forest & Park Supervisor I is responsible for supervising the maintenance of assigned recreational areas; inspecting the condition of state‑operated forest and park recreational areas and facilities; patrolling recreational areas; permitting usage of recreational facilities; and organizing and implementing recreational and cultural programs.
Primary Duties
Supervise maintenance of assigned recreational areas, including grounds maintenance, building and equipment upkeep, removal of hazardous trees or limbs, and repair activities.
Inspect state‑operated forest and park recreational areas and facilities to determine suitability for public use, ensure compliance with safety standards, and identify maintenance needs.
Patrol recreational areas and facilities to maintain security and enforce rules, regulations, and policies.
Check buildings on a daily basis.
Issue permits or grant permission for use of recreational facilities, park areas, etc., and collect related fees.
Maintain records and prepare reports concerning assigned work to provide information for recommendations.
Assist in the organization and implementation of recreational and cultural programs for visitors.
Coordinate activities and work of volunteers, court‑referred individuals, and other participants.
Determine supply needs, operate routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles, provide public information, interview employment candidates, provide on‑job training, and use small hand tools.
Monitor operation, administration, and maintenance of a major recreation area, including satellite sites, extensive grounds, and multiple recreational facilities, and operate the online revenue reporting and ORMS reservation systems.
Represent the agency at meetings and conferences with federal, state, municipal, community, and other groups to provide information concerning agency objectives and obtain cooperation.
Prepare budgets for assigned areas by projecting resource needs and submitting required documentation for the agency’s budget request.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
Ability to work outside in inclement weather, during odd hours, and with overtime or holiday expectations.
Minimum Entrance Requirements
Two years full‑time (or equivalent part‑time) technical or professional experience in forestry, parks, or recreational management.
Or an associate’s degree or higher majoring in forestry, natural resource management, or parks and recreation management.
Special requirement: current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
