Organizational Relationship
Directly responsible to the Executive Director of Student Support Services in all areas of Special Education and to the Principal in all matters pertaining to the building.
Statement of Duties:
Provides direct services for children in integrated and pullout settings as determined by IEPs.
Develops modifications to assist students in the regular classrooms.
Participates as a member of the evaluation team when appropriate.
Evaluates children who have been referred, developing appropriate reports and IEPs as required.
Trains classroom Educational Support Personnel as necessary.
Co‑ordinates and arranges team meeting process if requested.
Works cooperatively with other personnel and parents.
Curriculum and Planning
Possesses sound knowledge and understanding of the subject matter and pedagogy and consistently engages students in learning experiences to acquire complex knowledge and skills.
Possesses knowledge of developmental levels and differentiates learning experiences.
Designs units of instruction with measurable outcomes and challenging tasks requiring higher‑order thinking skills aligned to state standards/local curricula.
Designs well‑structured lessons with measurable objectives and appropriate student engagement strategies, pacing, sequence, activities, materials, resources, technologies, and grouping.
Assessment
Designs and administers informal and formal assessments, including common interim assessments, to measure student learning, growth, and progress.
Analyzes assessment results to determine progress toward intended outcomes and uses findings to adjust practice.
Analysis
Draws conclusions from assessment data to improve student learning.
Shares conclusions with colleagues and seeks feedback.
Provides descriptive feedback and engages students and families in constructive conversation.
Instruction
Defines high expectations and provides exemplars, rubrics, and guided practice.
Uses motivational instructional practices.
Applies tiered instruction and scaffolds for diverse learners.
Learning Environment
Creates safe physical and intellectual environment using rituals, routines, and responses.
Develops students’ interpersonal, group, and communication skills and opportunities for group work.
Guides students to identify strengths, interests, and needs, take academic risks, and challenge themselves.
Cultural Proficiency
Uses strategies enabling students to respect differences.
Responds appropriately to conflicts arising from differences.
Expectations
Communicates and enforces standards for work, effort, and behavior.
Models and reinforces mastery through effort.
Adapts instruction, materials, and assessments to make material accessible to all.
Family and Community Engagement
Uses strategies to support family participation in classroom and school.
Regularly updates parents on curriculum and suggests support strategies.
Provides clear expectations for learning and behavior.
Maintains two‑way communication and responds promptly.
Communicates respectfully, respecting home language, culture, values.
Regularly reflects on lessons, units, interactions to improve practice. Proposes challenging, measurable professional practice goals based on student data.
Consistently seeks out and applies ideas for improvement from supervisors, colleagues, professional development.
Collaboration with colleagues in developing standards‑based units, analyzing performance, planning intervention.
Consistently contributes to planning and decision making at school, department, grade level.
Reinforces schoolwide behavior and learning expectations.
Responsible for instruction and general duties per building Principal, Director of Special Education, Superintendent directives, policies.
Qualifications
Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities – SEI Endorsement required.
Previous teaching or experience with children with Moderate Special Needs – preferred.
Proficiency evidenced through transcripts of undergraduate/graduate work. Preference to evidence of academic accomplishment and strength in content areas.
Alternatives to qualifications as deemed appropriate by Superintendent.
