Job Description
Teaching 5th grade during the 2026‑2027 school year; responsible for developing students' skills and knowledge, maintaining a classroom climate that nurtures learning, and contributing to students' development as mature, responsible adults.
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
A teacher has the responsibility to help students develop skills and knowledge consistent with the district's curriculum and goals, and to maintain a classroom climate that supports learning.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Prepare lesson plans that reflect a logical sequence of learning objectives and activities and meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
Create and maintain a classroom environment that promotes self‑esteem and is conducive to effective teaching and learning.
Use a variety of instructional strategies and materials that are appropriate for the stated objectives and the needs and abilities of the students involved.
Monitor and assess student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
Communicate student academic and behavioral progress to parents.
Establish standards of classroom conduct and administer them fairly, equitably, and consistently.
Keep accurate records and provide them for school district use and file required reports in a timely manner.
Develop a budget for applicable programs and ensure that needed materials are ordered with the administrator’s approval.
Participate in required staff meetings and conferences.
Participate in committees related to student needs, school programs, and district needs.
Provide supervision in non‑classroom areas and situations in accordance with the building student management plan.
Promote and maintain a safe and healthful environment in the classroom and building.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Care for district resources, equipment, and materials assigned to instructor and report concerns regarding facility and equipment to designated supervisor.
Be knowledgeable of and adhere to all procedures and practices prescribed in the Teacher, Student, and/or Parent Handbooks.
Maintain a current folder of responsibilities and procedures for substitute teacher’s use.
Keep an accurate and detailed account of all monies collected and submit a detailed accounting to the appropriate building or business office personnel.
Participate in the development and implementation of building‑level goals.
Attend and participate in required district in‑service programs.
Stay current with professional staff development opportunities.
Share expertise and knowledge with other staff.
Demonstrate punctuality and dependability.
Promote a positive attitude and enthusiasm toward education.
Develop and maintain positive and cooperative interactions and communication with school staff, clients, and the community.
Utilize established channels for handling routine procedures, resolving problems, and making suggestions.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to building principal. Interacts with administrators, teachers, support staff, students, and parents.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is performed primarily indoors with some outdoor supervision. The individual must stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, lift, and carry up to 20 pounds. Activities include frequent standing and walking.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution. Specific endorsements may be required for specialized subjects.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Licenses and Special Requirements:
Washington State Teaching Certification with appropriate endorsement. Valid Washington State driver’s license or photo identification. Social Security Card. WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance.
