Vice President of Development Engineering – Flexible Generation

will lead technology assessment, project design, and engineering support for RWE America’s flexible power generation portfolio. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), Flexible Generation, you will recruit and lead a focused, highly talented team of engineering experts to deliver high‑reliability thermal solutions, including aeroderivative and frame natural gas turbine technologies. This position will play a critical role in our energy campus solutions providing critical reliability and firming capabilities alongside our renewable energy portfolio for our customers.

Role Responsibilities

Team Leadership: Build and lead a focused team of flexible generation engineering experts.

Integrated Solutions: Work closely with the Flexible Generation business development and product teams to develop standalone greenfield and brownfield flexible generation solutions, and larger, multi‑technology energy campuses.

Synergy & Standardization: Collaborate with the Renewable Engineering team to tap in resources in the area of Balance of Plant (Electrical, Civil, and Power Plant Controls) to ensure capturing synergies and standardization across technologies.

Project Siting & Design: Partner with the Development and Origination teams to design technical solutions that align with specific siting constraints, environmental regulations, and gas availability requirements.

Procurement & Contracting: Work in lockstep with Procurement for technical due‑diligence, technology and vendor selection, and technical contracting of flexible generation solutions.

Execution Alignment: Collaborate with Pre‑construction and Project Execution teams to ensure critical system inputs and technical specifications are accurately accounted for in EPC contracting and negotiations.

Technical Excellence: Build excellence in market understanding, technology scouting, and product pre‑qualification for heavy duty frame, aeroderivative and reciprocating engine technologies, ensuring a sustainable competitive advantage.

Continuous Improvement: Ensure the team balances a development mindset with engineering excellence and financial diligence, incorporating feedback from RWE’s global operating companies to optimize design.

International Collaboration: Build excellent relationships with RWE international operating companies to bring global expertise and operating experiences to enhance RWE America’s flexible generation projects.

Job Requirements and Experiences

Master’s in Engineering Science or a related technical field or Bachelor’s plus significant relevant experience.

Minimum 10 years of experience in power generation engineering, with a proven track record in the design, engineering, and delivery of flexible generation.

Ability to provide clear direction around a vision and to foster the spirit of working together, displaying respect, courtesy, tact, and openness.

Deep understanding of natural gas generation system design, including fuel handling, thermal cycles, and integration with the grid.

Proven ability to meet performance and organizational goals and foster growth strategies, including managing department and project engineering cost budgets.

Familiarity and established relationships with applicable vendor networks to support delivery of business objectives.

Understanding of environmental and permitting requirements (e.g., air quality, emissions limits, and water usage) and how they directly impact plant design and site viability.

Extensive experience in utility‑scale project development, from initial origination and siting through to construction and commissioning.

Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time.

Pay range
The annual base salary range for this position in Illinois is $226,000‑$280,000. The listed salary range represents our good‑faith estimate for this position and represents the range for new hire salaries across all U.S. locations. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. RWE considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s education & work experience, training & certifications, and key skills as well as market and business considerations at the time of the offer.
