Overview
Kforce has a client that is seeking an Assistant Controller in Rockville, MD. Reporting to the Controller, this role is a key contributor within the finance and accounting function. The Assistant Controller will help ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain strong internal controls, and support core processes including month‑end close, audits, payroll oversight, grant and contract accounting, and regulatory compliance. The position partners closely with accounting, payroll, and leadership teams to ensure the organization’s financial operations are sound, timely, and aligned with mission‑driven goals.
Responsibilities
Review balance sheet reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness
Partner with the accounting team to validate journal entries and reconciliations
Analyze revenue and expense variances against budget; recommend corrections and improvements
Review and true‑up grant and contract expenses within the general ledger
Manage and review staff salary allocations and payroll‑related general ledger entries
Prepare monthly management and financial reporting packages
Ensure revenue and expenses are recorded in the correct accounting period
Prepare fringe benefit and overhead cost rates
Perform cost analyses related to specific funding or regulatory requirements
Support payroll review processes for a workforce of approximately 400–500 employees
Assist with payroll‑related tax matters as needed
Support year‑end close and audit preparation activities
Reconcile intercompany transactions
Provide guidance and training on finance‑related policies and procedures as needed
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA strongly preferred
5+ years of progressive accounting experience
Strong knowledge of operational accounting, technical accounting, and GAAP‑based financial reporting
Demonstrated analytical skills with the ability to solve complex accounting issues
Ability to communicate effectively with both finance and non‑finance stakeholders
High ethical standards with a commitment to accuracy, transparency, and internal controls
Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and adaptable in a fast‑paced environment
Strong technology aptitude; experience with modern accounting and payroll systems
Compensation and Benefits
The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors such as relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract, and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.
We offer comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance, HSA, FSA, 401(k), and life, disability, and ADD insurance to eligible employees. Salaried personnel receive paid time off. Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
