About This Role
FiberTel is looking for an
HDD Operator
for our Springville, UT location. A successful operator is specially trained and has expertise in locating for horizontal directional drill rigs and product support equipment. The role involves setting up and completing drilling variable‑sized underground boreholes, pulling back required pipe and operating a variety of directional drilling equipment including Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch rigs, vacuum trucks, mud trucks, excavators, forklifts and dump trucks.
Responsibilities
All phases of telecommunication construction include but are not limited to loading, driving, delivery, digging, removal and placement of construction materials and equipment, and operating directional drill rigs.
Locate for Horizontal Directional Drill for installation of underground pipe.
Ensure safety of the public and other utilities underground facilities.
Operate Horizontal Directional Drill.
Assist in potholing and remediation.
Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie‑ins.
Read and comprehend utility locates.
Set equipment up, including the drill, water tanks and grounding the machine.
Formulate and mix drilling mud for the site conditions.
Perform proper reaming and pull back methods for existing conditions.
Oversee laborers and/or crew members’ work and monitor time usage.
Clean and maintain equipment, check fluid levels and conduct visual inspections to ensure optimal safety.
Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections and required maintenance, including winterizing equipment.
Communicate with supervisor daily to turn in required reports (e.g., bore log, vehicle maintenance reports, crew time logs).
Follow specifications for the job and company policies.
Comply with safety procedures on and off the project site.
Strive for optimal production while working safely and performing quality work.
Qualifications
Must pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
Possess a valid driver’s license or be eligible and willing to obtain the required license.
A good driving record is required.
Basic knowledge of operating various types of utility trucks and equipment in a safe manner.
Basic knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and equipment safely.
Class A Commercial Driver’s License is a plus (higher wage scales apply).
Ability to communicate effectively with customers, employees, and supervisors.
Willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
Ability to lift/carry 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs as needed with or without assistance.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous construction experience, preferably in the telecommunication industry.
Knowledge of established Horizontal/Directional Drill Locator/Operator procedures and techniques.
Ability to perform Horizontal/Directional Drill Locator/Operator procedures and duties.
Ability to travel.
Working Conditions
This is a full‑time hourly position, expected to work at least 40 hours per week. The position operates in an outdoor environment and is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme cold, rain, sleet, snow, humidity, high temperatures, and high wind. The work environment varies by terrain and may occasionally expose the worker to natural gas, electrical shock, and moderate to loud noise levels.
Physical Requirements
Employee must be able to stand for long periods of time (up to 12 hours), tolerate extreme weather conditions, speak and hear worksite safety instructions, and regularly lift 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
