Information Technology Supervisor (Departmental Promotional Only)

Information Technology (IT) Supervisor – the Department of Public Works seeks a highly motivated individual to supervise IT staff and programs in desktop support, production/server support, applications support, and general departmental automation. This role provides leadership in planning, coordinating, and implementing unit or division automation and systems development efforts, directing staff, and managing departmental policies, training, and budgeting.

Examples Of Duties

Direct, supervise, evaluate and counsel staff in developing, installing, and maintaining systems solutions.

Plan, direct, monitor, and evaluate the effectiveness of information technology support systems, including needs assessment, program design, implementation, and evaluation.

Coordinate and monitor acquisition of hardware, software, and peripherals.

Identify needs, negotiate and manage contracts for system installations and IT support.

Plan and develop security protocols and procedures; develop and administer security training.

Assist in the preparation, administration, review, and evaluation of the unit budget.

Direct, coordinate, and participate in the development and implementation of project goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and priorities that balance customer needs and professional standards.

Maintain relationships with public and private organizations, including county departments and agencies; consult with other managers on program issues and assist in implementing solutions.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of

Supervisory principles and practices, including work planning and evaluation, project management, scheduling, and training.

Data processing principles, concepts, and terminology.

Job planning and prioritizing techniques.

Methods and practices of computer system design, programming, and implementation.

Information management platforms and systems.

Principles and techniques of advanced systems analysis and design.

Current technologies for systems design and delivery.

Cost estimating and cost/benefit analysis.

Advanced principles and practices of program management, including planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Principles of budget preparation and monitoring.

Principles of personnel training, supervision, and evaluation.

Skill/Ability to

Plan, organize and coordinate programs and services to meet customer needs.

Coordinate program area activities with other departments, programs, and outside agencies.

Integrate a variety of activities and services to achieve program goals, objectives, and priorities.

Analyze problems accurately, develop recommendations, and take appropriate action to resolve them.

Prepare complex and detailed written reports, procedures, grant applications, and contracts.

Analyze complex operational, programming, and systems problems, evaluate alternatives, and reach sound conclusions.

Use initiative and sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.

Maintain accurate records and files.

Organize work, set priorities, and meet critical deadlines.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with collaborators.

Plan, schedule, and manage projects.

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that likely provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Typically, three years of progressively responsible IT support experience, including at least one year in a project lead or senior position, is a typical qualification.
