Job Summary
The primary function of the Shop Foreman is to assign, supervise and verify the quality of work performed by the Service Technicians.
Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains Service Shop capacity control and communicates capacity status throughout the day with Service Writer/Production Control.
Receives work orders from the Service Writer and assigns them to Service Technicians based upon their skill level and the time‑of‑completion directed by the Service Writer/Production Control.
Personally performs quality‑control checks of workmanship on each service project and provides technician training.
Coordinates communication between Service Writer and Service Technician regarding recommended services, changes in repairs, costs, and time‑of‑completion.
Controls actual time spent by Service Technician on each service job performed on a flat rate.
Controls special tools and equipment purchase, usage and replacement.
Supervises janitorial maintenance of the Service facility.
Assists Service Writer, Service Manager, Production Control and Warranty Administrator in the performance of their duties.
Maintains a working understanding of all warranty policies and procedures of vendors and Kenworth.
Maintains a level of training and experience with specialized materials, equipment and safety techniques necessary for superior servicing of the customer’s equipment – including but not limited to Service.Net, QSOL, CAT, Service Ranger, etc. Attends training sessions as required by the Service Manager.
Generates and maintains all work orders and repair orders. Assists customers in identifying needed services.
Personally coordinates all customer contact with the Service Department, including repair estimates, service appointments, customer authorization on service orders, status‑of‑repair inquiries, payment terms, and complaints.
Calculates all labor charges on flat rate repair orders. Reviews all labor charges on hourly‑rate repair orders. Demonstrates the ability to close all repair orders.
Insures timely, competent and courteous relations with service customers. Analyzes quality‑control reports.
Promotes the sales of labor, parts and accessories during customer contact.
Monitors daily all open repair orders and closes them as quickly as possible. Troubleshoots with the parts department any delays in receiving parts and resolves them quickly. Monitors inter‑company tickets to ensure equal priority.
Issues workmen’s compensation "First Report of Injury" forms to injured employees, ensuring they are correctly completed, forwarded to the Service Manager for review and to the insurance company for claim processing.
Assists Service Manager, Warranty Administrator, Credit Department and Production Control in the performance of their duties.
Works with Credit Manager in verifying open charge‑account status prior to accepting PO, unit release and updating the repair order system estimates.
Maintains friendly working relationships with customers and company employees, providing assistance/information/instruction as necessary to expedite repairs and preserve good relationships.
Qualifications
Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Two years of experience as a heavy‑duty truck repair technician.
Working knowledge of all heavy‑truck repair methods.
One‑year supervisory experience.
Excellent communication and managerial skills.
Valid Commercial Driver’s License with a good driving record.
Professional personal appearance.
Working Conditions
This is a physically demanding position. The foreman will stand six to eight hours per shift, lift parts weighing up to 50 pounds, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, handle, and feel. Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, exhaust fumes, paint, and other hazardous and non‑hazardous materials is expected. The foreman may be required to climb in and out of customers’ vehicles to record information and road‑drive. A dealership uniform may be required.
