Custodian I, II, III, or IV at Romney Middle School, Hampshire County Schools.
Job Summary
The Custodian maintains the county buildings in a state of operating excellence, ensuring they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. Duties include custodial tasks, repairs, and receiving supervision from the building administrator and, if applicable, the head custodian.
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent
Criminal background check completed
Meet the definition of “Qualifications” under WV Code §18A-4-8b
Demonstrated competency as required by state-approved competency test
Performance Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, and the general public
Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations consistent with the duties of the position
Interface effectively with other departments, school personnel, other maintenance staff, and business contacts from outside the county
Pass the written and performance tests that are directly related to the position
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community
Perform duties in full compliance with all county requirements and the Board of Education Policies
Read and comply with labels and safety warnings on cleaning agents and hazardous materials
Perform strenuous physical activity related to custodial duties
Work under minimal or no supervision and be flexible; be an effective self-starter
Complete necessary training and in-service as required by the county
Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists consistent with the duties of this position
Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Maintain regular attendance
Cleans classrooms, offices, libraries, restrooms, and common areas, including chalkboards, dusting, emptying trash receptacles, vacuuming, and washing windows
Scrubs, mops, disinfects, and polishes hard-surfaced floors in restrooms, cafeterias, hallways, classrooms, etc., including regular waxing
Disinfects all water fountains, floors in the restroom, commodes, urinals, and sinks daily
Maintains an inventory and requisition of janitorial supplies and informs the head custodian of needs in advance
Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required and as directed by the principal
Immediately reports any vandalism of school property to supervisor
Disinfects areas of high touch during flu season to help prevent spread of the flu
Receives prior permission from building principal and Superintendent to work in excess of 40 hours per week; Overtime Authorization Form signed by Superintendent or designee
Corrects minor safety hazards when observed and/or immediately refers safety hazards to the building supervisor
Uses equipment appropriately: cleans after regular use and reports any issues to supervisor or head custodian
Maintains confidentiality
Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Additional Duties for Custodian II/III/IV
Shovel, plow, and sand walkways, driveways, parking areas, and steps as assigned
Perform supportive duties such as flag display, flag flying, inventory supplies, report safety hazards within building, store equipment
Assume responsibility for the security of the building—lock and lock doors and windows and turn off lights as needed before leaving the building for the night (except emergency lights)
Maintain grounds, including mowing and trimming grass, picking up trash, and other general maintenance of the grounds
Additional Duties for Custodian III/IV
Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning to provide temperature appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity
Head Custodian may include supervising other custodian personnel if directed by administration
Physical Demands
The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Frequent stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, climbing, and ladder use of at least six feet and repetitive motions are required. Frequently lift and/or move at least 75 pounds (a dolly or other assistance may be used).
Specific vision abilities required include close vision to read handwritten or typed material and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
The work environment includes temperature extremes ranging from below freezing outdoors to over 100°F in furnace rooms or kitchen areas. Work surfaces may be slippery when mopping, stripping floors, or completing snow removal. Noise level is moderate to loud (60‑90 dB).
Other duties that may be performed by individuals in this position and additional duties may be assigned by the Superintendent or designated designee.
