Job Description
A. Personnel employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse, to operate the heating and cooling systems and to make minor repairs.
B. Perform assigned tasks in keeping building clean and attractive for the educational environment.

Dimension
Reports to the building supervisor. Operates various floor scrubbing machines, buffers, and vacuum cleaners. Operates and does maintenance on heating and cooling systems and make minor repairs.

Nature and Scope
Receives verbal or written instructions from building supervisor.

Functions, Obligations and Duties

The Custodian shall be neatly dressed and shall maintain a high standard of personal cleanliness. He/she shall refrain from the use of objectionable language and shall be tactful, congenial and courteous in his /her contacts with pupils, teachers, co‑workers and the general public.

Whenever a Custodian finds out that he/she is unable to be on the job, he/she shall notify the building principal at the earliest moment.

The Custodian shall not leave his/her work assignment during working hours unless his/her absence has been approved by the building principal.

The Custodian shall have general supervision of and be directly responsible for the care, maintenance, protection and preservation of his/her school building and the contents thereof. He/she shall see that his/her buildings and grounds are all times maintained in a satisfactory condition for school use and occupancy.

He/she shall keep all doors and windows locked.

He/she shall keep the snow off the steps of the buildings and walks inside the school premises.

The Custodian has the serious responsibility of preventing accidents and to protect the buildings and property against fire hazards and deterioration through the means of daily inspections of buildings and grounds, taking the initiative in making minor repairs, and the prompt reporting to his/her principal of the need for major repairs.

The Custodian reports immediately any unsafe, and/or adverse condition to his/ her immediate supervisor.

The Custodian shall maintain constant vigilance against conditions and practices which offer the threats of fire in the building and on the grounds. Burnable rubbish, papers, and waste shall be disposed of daily. He/she shall be responsible for the care and maintenance of all fire extinguishers and the fire‑prevention devices and be able to know the correct method of using various fire equipment in case of fire emergency.

The Custodian, in his/her inspections, shall be on the alert to either faulty construction, faulty equipment or faulty furnishings with particular reference to any indication of sagging ceilings, loose ceiling tiles, loosened lighting fixtures, loose panes of glass, loose blackboards, loose overhead door closures, bookcases, shelving, defective and loosened tracks, hangers and chains on stage furnishings, window drapes and blinds, window shades and all other furnishings in order to make certain that there is not a danger of falling objects in building.

The Custodian shall be in charge of small heating plants and shall be responsible for the heating and ventilation of the building. He/she shall check all areas of the building for adequate heat and insure that temperatures are maintained at a level as approved by the Board of Education for both school and non‑school periods. The custodian shall be responsible for preventing freezing of pipes, for the efficient operation of the heating system, and for insuring that there is a sufficient amount of fuel on hand at all times.

The custodian shall be responsible for the care of school grounds, including lawns, paved surfaces, playground, equipment, storm drains, sewage disposal system, and the overall cleanliness of grounds, including the removal of litter, rubbish, stone, paper and other debris each day.

Sweep, dust and otherwise clean the interior and exterior of the buildings as established by yearly, monthly and daily schedules. It is the custodian's responsibility to secure a cleaning schedule from the principal.

Writing on walls, doors and buildings shall be promptly removed daily.

Custodians shall inspect each toilet and restroom four times daily, keeping them equipped with supplies, clean and in sanitary condition. When cleaning restrooms of the sex opposite the custodian, assure that the restroom is vacant.

The Custodian shall clean dry erase boards as frequently as necessary.

Special attention shall be given to the condition of floors. Floors shall be buffed by machine, particularly corridors, as frequently as possible.

Window shades shall be adjusted to a uniform height in all rooms during the daily cleaning operations.

Custodians shall exhibit regular attendance punctuality.

Custodians shall insure that a reasonable amount of custodial supplies are on hand. He/shall initiate a request for supplies by presenting the proper form to the principal and /or Maint. Director.

The Custodian shall exclude from the building and grounds all persons who are not there on legitimate business and shall apprehend and file a complaint against all persons found prowling around the school premises or found damaging the property.

The Custodian shall not receive visits from relatives or friends in the school except on emergency. He/she shall not permit persons to loiter in or around the school premises at any time.

The Custodians shall perform all additional services required by the principal in the maintenance of the school.

Qualifications

Physically and mentally capable of performing tasks within the job description.

Must have obtained a High School Diploma or GED.

Successful passage of the State Competency Test for Custodians or holds or has held the classification as a Custodian.
