Position Title
Special Education Classroom Teacher

Job Summary
The Ankeny Community School District (CSD) is renowned for its excellence across academics, athletics, the arts, and various activities. As a Special Education Teacher, you will design and deliver individualized instruction that aligns with district curriculum, support students’ academic, social, and functional skill development, foster inclusive learning environments, and partner with families to achieve meaningful progress. Candidates should hold an early childhood endorsement, Strategist I and/or Strategist II certification, or a willingness to obtain the appropriate endorsement by Aug 1, 2026.

Qualifications

Education & Licensure:

Bachelor’s degree in a position-related area; Iowa BOEE Teacher License.

Endorsements:

Early childhood endorsement or Strategist I and/or Strategist II certification; willing to obtain appropriate endorsement by 1 Aug 2026.

Experience:

Prior teaching experience preferred but not required.

Essential Functions
Instructional Support
Accommodate and/or modify course content, in collaboration with general education teachers, to provide specially designed instruction addressing individualized learning plans. Deliver such instruction to improve student success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills. Support classroom teachers in implementing established curriculum and/or individual student plans.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring
Administer developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to evaluate student competency levels and develop individual learning plans. Assess student progress toward objectives, expectations, and goals—including behavioral, motor development, communication skills, academic needs, and vocational abilities. Prepare written materials—adaptive materials, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs, behavior logs—to document progress and meet mandated requirements.

Behavior and Student Support
Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment. Counsel students to improve performance, health status, problem-solving techniques, and personal issues. Monitor students in various educational environments (classroom, playground, field trips, naps) to maintain safety.

Communication and Collaboration
Advise parents/legal guardians on student progress and communicate expectations, achievements, and improvement methods. Collaborate with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes. Respond to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators, etc. Participate in meetings—including LEPs and 504 meetings—to gather or share required information.

Student Health and Safety
Administer first aid and assistance to medically fragile children if nurse not available. Report incidents (fights, suspected abuse, substance abuse, etc.) to maintain personal safety and comply with laws.

Attendance & Reliability
Demonstrate consistent attendance and punctuality, maintaining instructional continuity and strong student relationships.

Adherence to Iowa Teaching & Ethical Standards
Follow Iowa Teaching Standards and Ethical Standards, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct. Uphold confidentiality, maintain boundaries, and act in the best interest of students, families, and the school community. Engage in reflective practice and continuous improvement.

Other Functions

Participate in staff development training, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.

Provide excellent customer service to all employees.

Work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision.

Demonstrate respect and professionalism in all interactions.

Use positive communication in all interactions.

Adhere to safety protocols and policies of the Ankeny Community School District.

Support District goals while adhering to all District policies.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Working Environment
Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing, walking. Conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. Emotional control under stress is required.

Terms of Employment
Work year established by the District; Salary according to schedule adopted annually.

Clearances
Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.

Evaluation
Job performance evaluated annually per district policies and procedures.
