Landscape Architect
Overview
This role leads and monitors specific segments of landscape architecture projects, with a strong focus on public sector work in the Detroit/Metro Detroit area. The position supports the full project lifecycle, from conceptual design and graphic development through technical documentation, coordination, and construction‑phase support. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality landscape, park, streetscape, and site design solutions while helping to ensure projects meet scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
Responsibilities
Direct and monitor assigned segments of landscape architecture projects, ensuring work aligns with project goals, standards, and schedules.
Participate in guiding the overall progress of projects, including conceptual design, graphic development, and preparation of written project documentation.
Provide project assistance by directing, supervising, coordinating, reviewing, and evaluating the work of landscape architecture, planning, and design disciplines within the project team.
Recommend and implement corrective actions when project issues arise, helping to keep projects on track and within scope.
Prepare and approve design drawings, specifications, studies, reports, and other written work related to landscape architecture and site design.
Prepare for and participate in oral presentations to prospective and existing clients, as well as review agencies and other stakeholders.
Direct and coordinate written materials and ensure timely receipt of information from subcontractors and consultants to meet overall project objectives.
Assist in the preparation of project schedules, equipment lists, manpower budgets, work plans, cost estimates, manpower forecasts, project correspondence, and project scope definitions.
Review and approve actions related to client requests for landscape architecture change orders, ensuring consistency with project requirements and budgets.
Apply strong site, park, and streetscape design skills to develop functional, aesthetic, and context‑sensitive solutions for municipal and public sector projects.
Use AutoCAD and Civil 3D to produce accurate technical drawings and digital deliverables for land development, civil design, and landscape architecture projects.
Interpret and apply ordinances, codes, plans, maps, and blueprints in the development and review of project designs.
Collaborate closely with the landscape architecture lead and multidisciplinary teams to support Detroit/Metro Detroit projects from either the Detroit or Waterford office.
Travel to local job sites, with occasional overnight stays, to attend field visits, review site conditions, and support project implementation.
Essential Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture.
5 or more years of experience in landscape architecture and design.
Proficiency in AutoCAD with the ability to produce technical drawings and perform digital production tasks.
Ability to read and interpret ordinances, codes, plans, maps, and blueprints.
Strong site design, park design, and streetscape design skills.
Strong graphic abilities to support conceptual design and presentations.
Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record.
Ability and willingness to travel to job sites, primarily locally with occasional overnight stays.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Registered Landscape Architect (RLA) credential is preferred.
Experience working on public sector and municipal projects is preferred.
Experience with Civil 3D for civil and land development design is highly beneficial.
Background in civil design and land development is a plus.
Experience preparing and participating in client and agency presentations is advantageous.
Work Environment
This position is based in an office environment in either the Detroit or Waterford office, supporting Detroit/Metro Detroit landscape architecture projects. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, averaging 40–45 hours per week. The role includes occasional field trips to job sites, primarily local with some overnight travel as needed. You will work within a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering setting that offers exposure to engineering and architectural design services, construction management, surveying, right‑of‑way acquisition, and materials testing. The culture emphasizes excellence, integrity, and service to the communities in which employees live and work, with a strong reputation for high‑quality design and client satisfaction. This is a long‑term contract role with the potential to transition to a direct position after approximately 9–12 months.
