Job Description
Assist a small number of handicapped students for more than 50% of the school day, providing physical help and emotional support to enable participation in the district’s special education program.

Qualifications

Must comply with all employment criteria legally established by the Lee County Board of Education.

A high school diploma or GED and one of the following: completion of 48 semester hours at an accredited college or university; OR an associate or higher degree with at least 64 semester hours or two years of coursework; OR an appropriate score on the ACT WorkKeys Paraprofessional Assessment Tests to meet federal ESSA standards.

Experience working with children in an educational setting preferred.

Must meet suitability criteria for employment under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of assigned tasks.

Board-acceptable alternatives to the above qualifications.

Background Check Required:

Upon offer, submit fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the FBI.

School Principal and Director of Special Education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (All Employees)

Attend on a regular, predictable basis.

Complete assigned tasks safely and in a constant state of alertness.

Uphold Board policies, including the anti‑harassment program.

Work cooperatively with students, teachers, staff, supervisors, and the public.

Work efficiently under time and productivity standards.

Essential Job Functions

Assist with implementation of occupational therapy and/or physical therapy recommendations.

Assist students with feeding and other self‑help skills.

Assist students with toileting needs, including diaper changes and transfer to/from toilet.

Assist with personal hygiene self‑help skills (e.g., brushing teeth, combing hair).

Support student mobility around the school campus.

Transport assistive technology devices around campus.

Hear students during recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, guiding as needed without teaching.

Perform simple errands such as sharpening pencils and carrying lunch trays.

Under supervision, work with small groups to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.

Accompany students to office or nurse’s office as necessary.

Establish supportive relationships without fostering intense emotional involvement.

Provide support to the student personnel evaluation team when requested.

Participate in in‑service training programs, as assigned.

Perform any other relevant tasks to aid classroom efficiency and effectiveness.

Essential Physical Demands
The employee must frequently lift and/or move at least 20 pounds and occasionally 25 pounds, stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb, balance, and occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Vision requirements include close, distance, and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Mental Functions
Frequently compare, analyze, communicate, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, and occasionally copy and negotiate.

Environmental Demands
Exposure to various illnesses, weather conditions, heated/air‑conditioned facilities, and a moderately quiet workplace that can become noisy at times.

Work Schedule
The work day is established by the building principal but shall not exceed 7.5 hours per day, excluding a ½ hour for a duty‑free lunch, unless other arrangements are made by the supervisor.

Terms of Employment
This is a nine‑month contract (182 days). Salary is based upon the board‑approved schedule.

Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated per the Board’s policy on evaluation of Support Personnel.

$27,562 to $29,751 Per Year

Job Requirements

High school or trade school degree preferred.
