General Description
Performs responsible, skilled work at the journeyman level involving boiler installations, operations, inspections, maintenance, repair and replacement. Work is performed under general supervision and requires coordination with others as necessary. Receives daily work orders from team leader or supervisor.
Job Description
Essential Job Functions
Troubleshoot and repair a variety of gas and electric boilers, hot water heaters and circulating pumps.
Installs new boilers, repairs variety of boiler components, including replacement of burners, heat exchangers, fans, pumps, blowers and seals.
Determines and maintains peak efficiency levels for boilers.
Annually inspects, cleans and services boilers.
Works with other maintenance workers, school officials and staff to resolve maintenance problems.
Provides other related duties as assigned.
Budgetary Responsibility
Provides and verifies invoices in a timely manner. Adheres to county spending guidelines.
Report Preparation
Simple written report due upon completion of every work order.
Equipment Operation
Utilizes equipment pertaining to the installation and repair of boilers.
Contacts
Facility Services personnel and office staff and administrators from individual schools. Occasional contact with vendors, building inspectors, contract workers.
Work Direction/Supervision
Occasional direction given to trades assistants and Facility Coordinators.
Decision Making
Frequent independent decision-making and problem solving as it relates to position. Seek supervisor’s approval for extensive repairs/replacement, all expenditures outside of routine supplies and materials and before calling an outside contractor.

Physical Demands
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal indoor levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to risk of cold and heat, some risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of practices and procedures of safe and efficient boiler operation, maintenance and repair; of boiler and building codes and of proper use of combustion test equipment and other equipment and tools typically used. Demonstrated ability to perform chemical tests; to read blueprints, wiring diagrams and other printed instructions and information; to work safely and efficiently with various types of equipment and tools; to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work independently. Ability to navigate basic operator level BAS functions for related equipment. Basic computer and keyboarding skills.
Additional Job Requirements
Any equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. 5 years of commercial experience repairing boilers preferred. Valid VA Driver's License. This position requires the incumbent to drive. In accordance with Policy 5431, an employee who occupies the position and is assigned a district-owned or leased motor vehicle will be subject to annual driving checks and must maintain acceptable records pursuant to the standards set forth in the policy.
