Job Description
Teaching Assistant (K-1st)
Part-Time 4.5 hrs/day
This role supports classroom teachers in managing and instructing students, including those on Individual Educational Plans (IEPs). You will assist with instructional tasks, classroom environment, student behavior, and various support duties as directed by the classroom teacher.
Essential Functions
Carry out instructional plans and IEP-related activities
Follow-up and review lessons
Maintain a pleasant and orderly classroom environment
Assist in managing classroom behavior and discipline as approved by the teacher
Procure, set up, and operate audio‑visual equipment
Support students in completing assigned learning tasks
Assist with instructional activities such as field trips, library visits, and assemblies
Help move students between learning environments
Record attendance and collect lunch monies as directed
Perform clerical duties (typing, filing, duplicating)
Supervise students in the lunchroom and during free time
Assist in maintaining student records under teacher or principal supervision
Provide toileting, feeding, and positioning assistance for students
Participate in team meetings
Assist with medical duties (e.g., catheterization, feeding, assistive devices)
Support carry‑over of related services such as OT, PT, speech, AP, vision
Perform other duties assigned by classroom teacher or principal
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Empathetic attitude toward disabled students; willingness to learn specialized instructional techniques; effective communication and relationship building with students, parents, and staff; high‑school graduate or equivalent; willingness to obtain CPR certification.
Education and Experience
High‑school graduation or equivalent; basic keyboard and filing training.
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work
Work in school settings (classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium). Requires frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 40 lbs, occasional transporting on field trips, moving students with wheelchairs, lifting audio‑visual equipment up to 50 lbs. Attendance at conferences and meetings may be required beyond normal hours.
Evaluation
Performance evaluated based on effectiveness in carrying out responsibilities.
