Salary: $19.81 - $27.22 per hour (depending on experience)
Job Summary
The Education Assistant – General Education position provides educational and classroom assistance under the guidance of teachers, principals and other supervisors. The assistant helps carry out instructional activities, promotes student safety and well‑being, and reinforces classroom programs. Responsibilities include observing and documenting student progress, implementing instruction plans, and assisting students with special health needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Confers with teachers, supervisors and colleagues to plan day‑to‑day routines, programs, and special projects.
Performs program‑related instructional, behavioral and related activities, including helping students with individualized educational plans (IEP, behavior, safety, etc.).
Undertakes delegated instructional tasks for individuals and small groups; assists with classroom assignments and monitors student activities in the classroom and other locations.
Performs instructional support tasks such as leveling prepared worksheets, organizing materials, creating and posting bulletin boards, collecting data and monitoring student progress.
Implements classroom, small group and individual social and behavioral management interventions/systems.
Manages personal student information according to federal and state laws and district policies, maintaining strict confidentiality.
Helps maintain an orderly and attractive instructional area by preventing litter, setting up study areas, cleaning chalkboards, storing supplies and assembling bulletin board displays.
Performs routine clerical work such as typing, photocopying, filing, record‑keeping and answering telephones.
Responsible for assigned building and classroom supervision, including field trips, playground, lunch, hall, bus duty and on‑bus supervision.
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all district policies and procedures.
Maintains consistent, daily and punctual attendance.
Non‑Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operates and troubleshoots various office equipment including telephones and photocopy machines.
Moves classroom furniture and organizes classrooms to enhance student learning.
Attends in‑service training, staff meetings and other meetings as assigned.
Reports issues to the principal and appropriate authorities regarding safety, sanitary and fire hazards, vandalism, thefts and errant wildlife.
Other Requirements
Consistently follows all applicable federal and state laws and all district policies, rules and supervisor directions.
Observes ergonomics of sedentary office work including placement of computers and monitors and sitting alignment.
Observes proper lifting techniques and other strategies to avoid accidents and personal injury while performing job duties.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
All school employees share responsibility for supervising students and maintaining a safe environment.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree or two years of community college/university study preferred.
Interpersonal Skills:
Works well with diverse backgrounds, solves conflict, maintains confidentiality, listens, remains calm and professional in interruptive environments, and interacts appropriately with staff and students.
Language Skills:
Communicates English fluently in writing and speaking, reads and interprets documents, prepares routine reports and correspondence with accuracy.
Mathematical Skills:
Performs basic arithmetic, calculates rates, ratios, percentages and proportions, draws and interprets bar graphs occasionally.
Reasoning Ability:
Applies common sense understanding to carry out instructions, and handles problems involving more than one variable.
Computer Skills:
Uses office computers and internet for email, research, word processing, database manipulation, visual presentations and general web‑based applications.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Exercises good judgment and works effectively in a dynamic environment.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid First Aid Card required. Must obtain or already possess necessary certificates, licenses or registrations including a valid Oregon Driver’s License.
Physical Expectations
Employee must regularly talk, see or hear. Frequently walks, stands, sits, uses fingers and hands for fine manipulation, handles objects, reaches with hands and arms, and moves inside and outside buildings. Occasionally pushes, pulls, bends, stoops, crawls, kneels and crouches. May lift or move up to 35 lbs. May occasionally climb stairs or ladders. Requires adequate visual acuity (close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception).
Work Environment
Standard classroom setting. Noise level usually low to moderate, occasionally high depending on location and activities. Employee may supervise children during arrival/departure and recess. Occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather, seasonal heat and cold. May encounter contagious diseases, bodily fluids and blood‑borne pathogens.

The selected candidate must provide proof of educational requirements, verify identity and employment authorization, complete a pre‑employment record check, and be approved by the State Department of Education after completing a Fingerprint‑Based Criminal History Verification.
