Job Summary
The Education Assistant – General Education position provides educational and classroom assistance under the guidance of teachers, principals, and other supervisors. The assistant helps carry out instructional activities, promotes student safety and well-being, and reinforces classroom programs. Responsibilities include observing and documenting student progress, implementing instructional plans, and assisting students with special health needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Collaborate with teachers, supervisors, and colleagues to plan day‑to‑day routines, programs, and special projects.
Perform program‑related instructional, behavioral, and administrative activities, including help with individualized education plans (IEP), behavior plans, and safety protocols.
Provide delegated instructional tasks for individuals and small groups; assist with classroom assignments and monitor student activity in the classroom and other locations.
Level prepared worksheets, organize materials, create and post bulletin boards, collect data, and monitor student progress.
Implement classroom, small‑group, and individual social and behavioral management interventions/systems.
Maintain personal student information according to federal and state laws and district policies while ensuring strict confidentiality.
Help maintain an orderly instructional area: prevent litter, put up bulletin board displays, clean chalkboards, store supplies, set up study areas, etc.
Perform routine clerical work such as typing, photocopying, filing, record‑keeping, and answering telephones.
Supervise assigned building and classroom duties, including field trips, playground, lunch, hallway, bus, and on‑bus supervision.
Demonstrate knowledge of all district policies and procedures.
Show consistent, daily, and punctual attendance.
Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate and troubleshoot office equipment such as telephones and photocopy machines.
Move classroom furniture and organize classrooms to enhance student learning.
Attend in‑service training, staff meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
Report safety, sanitary, fire, vandalism, theft, and wildlife incidents to the principal and appropriate authorities.
Other Requirements
Consistently follow all applicable federal and state laws, district policies, rules, and supervisor directions.
Observe ergonomics for sedentary office work, proper lifting techniques, and other strategies to avoid injury.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required. An associate degree or two years of community college/university study preferred.
Interpersonal Skills:
Works well with diverse groups; maintains confidentiality; stays calm and professional amid interruptions; interacts appropriately with staff and students.
Language Skills:
Fluent in spoken and written English, including spelling and grammar; able to respond to inquiries and prepare routine reports.
Mathematical Skills:
Basic arithmetic, use of fractions and decimals, calculate rates and percentages, interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Applies common sense, follows oral or written instructions, solves problems involving multiple variables.
Computer Skills:
Uses office computers, email, research, word processing, databases, visual presentations, and web applications.
Other Skills:
Uses good judgment and works effectively in a dynamic environment.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid First Aid Card required. Must obtain any additional certificates or licenses as required, including a valid Oregon driver’s license.
Physical Expectations
Talk, see, and hear regularly. Walk, stand, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, reach, and move inside and outside buildings. Occasionally push, pull, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, crouch. Lift up to 35 lbs. Occasionally climb stairs or ladders. Maintain required visual abilities.
Work Environment
Standard classroom setting with low to moderate noise levels, occasionally higher. Occasionally supervise children during arrival, departure, and recess. Exposed to wet or humid conditions, seasonal heat and cold, and possible exposure to contagious diseases, bodily fluids, and blood‑borne pathogens.
Special Requirements
The selected candidate must provide proof of educational requirements, verify identity and employment authorization, complete a pre‑employment record check, and be approved by the State Department of Education after a Fingerprint‑Based Criminal History Verification.
