Sterile Processing Technician

SUMMARY
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for ensuring a sterile and functioning supply of materials and equipment while maintaining an understanding of microbiology and infection control standards. The Sterile Processing Technician will collect, clean, decontaminate, disinfect and/or sterilize surgical instruments, trays and packs, reusable medical devices and patient care equipment according to established standards and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Operates sterile processing equipment (washers, steam, gas, ultrasonic and chemical sterilizers)

Documents and maintains accurate sterilization records

Inspects, assembles and tests general and specialty instrumentation for proper functioning

Performs simple maintenance on equipment (i.e., cleans filters and drains)

Prepares trays for designated areas according to policies and procedures

Ensures count sheets are correct and updated as necessary

Prepares and pulls instruments for cases and assists with OR room readiness

Selects appropriate method of sterilization for equipment or supplies

Stocks, manages and documents inventory appropriately to avoid shortages of supplies and materials

Maintains strict confidentiality of client information

Complies with Infection Control, Standard Precautions and OSHA standards for healthcare professionals

Performs other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to read, communicate effectively and understand medical/surgical terminology

Knowledge of reusable surgical instrumentation, microsurgical instrumentation, and power equipment

Knowledge of sterile processing equipment (washers, steam, gas, ultrasonic and chemical sterilizers)

Knowledge of cleaning patient care equipment including but not limited to IV pumps, PCAs, CPM machines, pneumatic pumps, hypo/hyperthermia units

Knowledge of different types of sterilization materials and equipment

Knowledge of SPD equipment, troubleshooting and infectious control practices

Knowledge of proper equipment usage for accurate usage when pulling instrument for cases

Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with HIPAA regulations and state requirements

Ability to work effectively within role independently and with other team members

Ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner

Ability to complete additional educational requirements as assigned by due dates

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or GED

One (1) year of current experience within the last three years in a healthcare setting

SPD Certification from an accredited program

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

COMPENSATION
Compensation to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.

EMPLOYMENT CONSIDERATIONS
Employment for this position is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check and drug screening.
