
Central Sterilization Technician

The Central Sterilization Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments, trays, and medical equipment. The CS Technician ensures that all sterile processing standards and protocols are followed to support safe patient care.

8-hour shifts
Essential Job Functions:
Decontaminate and clean used instruments and equipment using manual and automated methods in accordance with infection control standards
Follow all safety and infection prevention policies, including the use of personal protective equipment
Inspect, assemble, and prepare surgical trays and instrument sets according to procedural specifications and physician preferences
Package and wrap equipment and supplies in accordance with prescribed sterile procedures
Sterilize instruments and materials using autoclaves and other approved methods
Start equipment and observe gauges and equipment operation to detect malfunctions and to ensure equipment is functioning properly
Label, date, and document sterilization cycles; maintain accurate records for quality control and regulatory compliance
Operate, maintain and clean sterilization equipment regularly; report equipment malfunctions to supervisor
Communicate with nursing units, operating rooms, and other departments to coordinate the supply and delivery of sterile items
Monitor inventory of sterile and non-sterile supplies; assist in restocking and rotating supplies to ensure availability and prevent expiration
Collect and/or receive supplies used in daily operation of the organization and dispose of according to standard protocols
Maintain storage rooms in a neat and orderly manner according to regulatory guidelines
Distribute supply of instruments ensuring to maintain sterility
Promptly report and document any occurrences of unusual events, safety concerns, or incidents in accordance with organization policies and procedures
Participate in the department’s on-call rotation and respond promptly to call-ins to ensure continuous patient care and surgical support as needed
Use the organization’s secure messaging platform in accordance with departmental protocols, including timely receipt and responses to communications
Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Medical terminology
Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems
Quality assurance and accreditation standards
Understanding of HIPAA regulations, patient confidentiality laws and patient rights
Effective English communication in verbal and written form
Quality work including attention to detail and accuracy
Basic computer proficiency
Carry out customer service standards
Capacity to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Prioritize tasks effectively through managing workload based on urgency and importance
Continuously learn and improve through staying up to date on job specific trends, policies, and new technologies
Successfully demonstrate organization-wide performance review competencies
Qualifications:
Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S
Certification with the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association is preferred, or must be obtained within one year of hire
Previous experience working in a hospital environment is preferred
Must possess a cell phone that interfaces with the organization’s secure message system
