Duties and Responsibilities
Level I
Demonstrates proficiency by performing routine and emergency echocardiograms, including 2‑dimensional, 3‑dimensional, Doppler, Transesophageal, and Stress Echocardiogram, as requested by the physician and in accordance with standard practices. Provides echocardiography service at all necessary locations, working variable shifts, weekends, and providing emergent call coverage as scheduled. Operates equipment necessary to perform all required procedures and to obtain optimal diagnostic recording; utilizes ancillary devices such as transducers, digital networking system, and off‑line analysis systems. Maintains equipment in working order, performing minor adjustments and repairs, routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and reports any malfunction to the echo lab manager. Analyzes the patient’s medical record, prepares preliminary reports for review and interpretation by the Cardiologist, compares results with previous studies, participates in quality improvement activities, and maintains appropriate logs and records. Stays current with the latest practices and collaborates with the department to implement improvements.
Level II
Actively participates with patient testing, performing routine, non‑routine, urgent, and emergent patient requests. Performs advanced cardiac ultrasound services, manipulates echocardiographic images in real‑time and off‑line, assists the physician with guided studies, and serves as a resource for Cardiac Sonographers and Cardiology Fellows. Acts as a preceptor, onboarding new sonographers and supporting the department in establishing and maintaining objectives and goals as a site Charge Sonographer. Provides quality assurance support and recommends improvements.
Level III
Provides advanced cardiac ultrasound services for complex cases such as congenital, myocardial mechanics, 3D imaging, and stress. Acts as an expert resource, instructing fellow sonographers through in‑services and education. Performs quality assurance to ensure all necessary echocardiographic data are obtained, standardizes exam protocols, and offers in‑service education and case reviews. Maintains all laboratory policies and collaborates with the Technical Manager and Medical Director for policy review. Prepares ICAEL applications to maintain accredited status.
Education Focus
Participates as a Lead Clinical Instructor in the Echocardiography Department, providing education for students, residents, and fellows in physics and image acquisition. Assists in research studies on new echocardiography techniques and technology, attending meetings to learn and apply new methods.
Clinical Lead Focus
Supports the Echocardiography service when the manager is unavailable, supervises, directs, coaches, and mentors staff. Evaluates staff, provides feedback and quality performance monitoring, directs orientation, and promotes professional development. Communicates with physicians and other healthcare professionals to facilitate department operations, monitors equipment maintenance, ensures compliance with policies, assists with hiring and evaluations, coordinates scheduling, and maintains payroll reports.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Graduate or completion of a program that meets eligibility requirements for registry/certification or currently holds the required registry or certification.
Experience:
None beyond the education/certification requirements. Minimum of two years’ experience as a Sonographer for Level II; minimum of four years’ experience within the specialty modality for Level III.
Certifications:
ARDMS/CCI certification in Echocardiography, ARDMS/CCI certification within 18 months of hire, and BLS certification.
Level I must obtain ARDMS certifications as required by each entity within 18 months of employment.
