Responsibilities
Recreation Therapist - PRN Opportunity
West Oaks Hospital, a 176‑bed acute care facility with accreditation, provides psychiatric care to the Houston area and surrounding communities. The facility offers a range of behavioral health programs and treatment at multiple levels of care, including inpatient, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient.
The Recreation Therapist will design and initiate therapeutic services to improve the physical, mental, and emotional well‑being of patients. Services include entertainment, exercise, relaxation, expression, music, art, pet, and other recreational programs.
Job Duties
Provide and implement a recreational assessment for each patient.
Deliver a variety of leisure activities.
Assist patients in understanding the benefits of ongoing health and fitness and in developing social interaction, coping skills, problem‑solving skills, anger management skills, and other skills related to the human domains for overall quality of life.
Collaborate with the treatment team to develop and implement therapeutic recreation programs.
Maintain recreational areas and equipment, ensuring a clean, sanitary, and safe environment. Orient patients and staff to gym equipment.
Complete documentation accurately and timely.
Observe patients and share appropriate information with management. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Requirements:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation, recreation administration, or recreation with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation.
Licensure and Certification: CTRS certification via National Certified Therapeutic Recreation Council, Certified Music Therapist, or Certified Art Therapist. CPR and hospital de‑escalation certifications.
Experience: None. Preferred: One year of experience in program development and implementation of therapeutic recreation activities in an inpatient psychiatric hospital.
