
General Service Technician - Carpenter

Position Summary
Reporting to facilities management, the General Services Technician – Unlicensed Carpenter is responsible for the fabrication, installation, and repair of items associated with the carpentry field including but not limited to doors, windows, ceilings, floors, etc. The position also requires significant knowledge and recent full‑time experience in the preparation, decoration and protection of interior and exterior surfaces of buildings.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Apply all types of primers, lacquers, paints, varnish, etc.
Install doors and windows, make and install shades, repair furniture, and install classroom fixtures.
Perform all types of remodeling and repair work on interiors and exteriors of buildings.
Use hand tools and operate table saws, drill presses, and other power tools.
Prepare surfaces for painting by using sandpaper, brushes, steel wool, scrapers, and/or cleaning detergents.
Fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster, or other filler.
Select premixed paint or mix required pigments, oil, and thinning/drying substances to match specified colors.
Apply paint, varnish, stain, epoxies, urethanes, enamels, lacquers, or other protective coatings using brushes, spray guns or rollers.
Carry, set up, and move ladders, staging, and drop cloths as needed.
Clean equipment and tools using solvents.
Cut, shape, and assemble wood, composition, and/or plastic sections with planers, jointers, shapers, routers, sanders, and power saws.
Assemble prepared components for chairs, desks, cabinets, bookcases, picture frames, and paneled doors.
Prepare structures for finish applications by planning, shaping and sanding with hand and power tools.
Read and interpret plans, sketches, and shop drawings for milling and fabrication.
Determine type and dimensions of wood stock.
Maintain and clean equipment and work area.
Prepare parts and tools each day.
Complete work in a timely and workmanlike manner.
Coordinate work functions with fellow workers.
Coordinate with manager for non‑stock tools and return them timely.
Participate in hospital internal training and meetings as required.
Maintain and safeguard hospital tools professionally.
Maintain equipment manuals and repair records.
Maintain in‑house inventory of parts for emergency/off‑hour repairs.
May direct work of student workers as assigned.
Respond to on‑call and overtime requirements as needed.
Perform similar or related duties as required.
Create and maintain accurate maintenance logs utilizing the CMMS.
Understand and adhere to hospital operating procedures for resources, time tracking, and maintenance logging.
Additional Duties (Selected)
Make rounds as assigned.
Plan and perform preventative maintenance schedules.
Troubleshoot equipment and report problems.
Prepare stock orders for maintenance purchasing.
Paint all painted and unpainted surfaces as assigned.
Construct, install, renovate, maintain, and repair carpentry functions.
Set up and clean meeting rooms per specifications.
Collect and dispose trash.
Assist and supervise outside vendors (technicians).
Deliver equipment and supplies throughout the health center.
Respond to maintenance requests from staff.
Make regular rounds on all floors and correct problems.
During winter season, remove snow and ice from pathways, ramps, and sidewalks.
Evaluate building and mechanical equipment for repair needs and safety.
Consult with administration on equipment and preventive maintenance.
Maintain safety procedures and encourage adherence.
Receive and store delivered supplies from vendors.
Operate machinery/equipment, including lawn equipment and snow blowers.
Perform work safely and efficiently.
Maintain a patient‑oriented environment.
Keep work areas clean and free of debris.
Use hospital core values to guide decisions.
Follow infection control and safety procedures.
Adhere to BMC's RESPECT behavior standards.
Job Requirements
Education:
High School diploma or GED
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required:
Valid U.S. Driver's License
Experience:
Minimum of 7 years of relevant carpenter experience with at least five current years in the field.
Knowledge and Skills:
Experience in general maintenance for all duties.
Ability to read and comprehend blueprints.
Working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment and CMMS.
Effective oral and written communication; proficiency in English.
Professional and tactful interaction with employees, faculty, students, and staff; ability to handle difficult persons or stressful scenarios.
Compensation
$26.35 – $39.16 per hour.
