Job Summary
The role of the Pediatric Surgery Nurse Practitioner is to facilitate multidisciplinary care through interaction with patients, housestaff, attendings, and ward nurses. Patient care provided includes but not limited to, initiating appropriate consultations and referrals, postoperative patient evaluation and care, follow-up evaluations; and patient care planning, care education, and coordination of care.

Minimum Qualifications

Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction

California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing License

California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Certificate within 3 months of hire

American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR

National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area

Graduation with a master's degree, DNP or PhD in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing

Minimum 1 year dedicated pediatric surgical experience, both inpatient and outpatient

Minimum 1 year dedicated pediatric colorectal experience, both inpatient and outpatient

Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Judgement skills to effectively meet the needs of patients

Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role

Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider

Knowledge of research methods

Ability to coordinate data collection

Judgment skills to effectively meet the needs of patients

Ability to use time effectively

Readily assist other workers and motivate cooperation of staff at all levels

Supervisory skills, knowledge and ability to train, lead, and oversee the work of others

Performs duties in a self-directed manner with minimal supervisor or direction according to defined level of responsibility

Demonstrate the ability to professionally interact and communicate appropriately with staff, patients, and families

Ability to write legibly and dictate clearly

Ability to apply relevant theories and concepts to clinical practice

Knowledge of hospital policy and procedures, standardized procedures, and scope of nursing practice

Ability to use advanced medical and nursing knowledge in the evaluation of a variety of medical and surgical problems by obtaining an accurate history and performing an appropriate physical exam

Physical ability and technical skills to perform a variety of surgical procedures and to assist in moving patients or stand on feet for extended periods of time

Specialized knowledge and skill in the management of Neonatal surgery patients and their families with complex problems with a focus on gastrointestinal and/or colorectal disorders

Pediatric surgery inpatient and outpatient knowledge

Pediatric colorectal skills (irrigations, enemas, bowel management, anal dilations)

Management of gastrostomy, cecostomy, and appendicostomy tubes

Management of ostomies

Pediatric surgical wound management knowledge

Preferred Qualifications

Doctor of Nursing Practice from an accredited School of Nursing is strongly preferred

Dedicated experience with bowel management and complex colorectal anomalies is preferred

Department Overview
The Department of Surgery encompasses a wide variety of divisional surgical specialties. These include burn surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, FMG surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, transplant surgery, trauma, acute care and surgical critical care surgery, vascular surgery, and surgical oncology. The Department's extensive surgical expertise, in combination with ongoing teaching and research activities, provide ample resources and advanced surgical techniques for patient care.
