We are hiring a court mediator under the general direction of the Court Executive 2b (Civil Division Manager). This role mediates cases in dispute, prepares and convenes mediation hearings, facilitates communication between counsel and parties, identifies case issues, and reports results to the Court. The mediator is expected to resolve disputes without the necessity of a trial or to prepare cases for trial. Excellent persuasive communication, listening, negotiating, creative thinking, and an understanding of the litigation process are essential.
SALARY
The salary range for this position is $79,098.16 to $123,272.27 for Schedule A, and $79,098.16 to $117,108.66 for Schedule B. New hires begin at the minimum of the respective range; promotions receive a 5% base increase or the greater of the band minimum or range maximum. Employees hired prior to June 3, 2014 are considered Schedule A; those hired on or after that date are Schedule B.
REMOTE WORK
This position may qualify for up to two days of remote work outside Judiciary buildings on a hybrid schedule. Remote work requires installation of a multifactor authentication app and high‑speed home internet access.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited law school and a Juris Doctor Degree is strongly preferred, along with experience in civil practice related to litigation or dispute resolution and prior experience as a court‑appointed mediator or settlement agent. Useful experience also includes working with diverse customers, teaching or training adults, and public engagement. A bachelor’s degree with five years of program development, coordination, analysis, administration, or research experience is required; an associate’s degree with two years of experience can substitute for a bachelor’s, and a master’s degree can substitute for one year of experience. A law degree may substitute for two years of experience.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant professional experience is required. Substitution guidelines allow additional paraprofessional or professional experience to replace education on a year‑for‑year basis (one year equals 30 semester hours). Associate’s degrees, master’s degrees, and law degrees provide specific equivalencies.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• A valid New Jersey driver’s license is required only if vehicular operation is essential to the role.
• Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. under Department of Homeland Security regulations; U.S. citizenship is not required.
• Newly hired employees must agree to a comprehensive background check, including fingerprinting, with all findings kept confidential except for informing the individual of results and related actions.
• Within one year of hiring, employees must establish and maintain a principal residence in New Jersey; exemptions are available under hardship or employer critical need.
