Boiler Plant Operator
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Muskogee, OK, United States
Summary
The Boiler Plant Operator position establishes responsibilities and duties of operating a complex steam generation system comprised of three 500 HP multi‑fuel high‑pressure power boilers with a total installed heat input of 63 000 000 BTU per hour (21 000 000 BTU per hour per boiler) and a total installed steam generating capacity of 51 750 pounds per hour (17 250 pounds per hour per boiler). The system is supported by associated auxiliary equipment and systems, including flue gas recirculation systems (FGR) and related controls.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all requirements listed and demonstrate sufficient training or experience to perform the duties of this position. Evidence of knowledge, skills, and abilities must be supported by detailed descriptions in your resume. Candidates will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screening is based on a prescribed screen‑out element (typically question 1). Candidates who satisfy the minimum qualification are then evaluated against additional job elements, including dexterity, safety equipment assembly, installation, repair, interpretation of instructions, measuring instruments, operation of equipment, and technical practices.
Duties
Operate, maintain, test, troubleshoot, repair, replace, or adjust subsystems or components of a complex steam generation system.
Utilize comprehensive knowledge of high‑pressure boiler operations, maintenance, and repair, including federal codes, regulations, methods, practices, and techniques to oversee safe and efficient steam production for medical center facilities.
Work in concert with other Boiler Plant Operators under the supervision of the Boiler Plant Supervisor and Lead Boiler Plant Operator.
Start/stop boilers, pumps, and related equipment; adjust boiler fires, pressure‑reducing valves, fuel and water controls; monitor condensate transfer and boiler feed water pressures; adjust pressure regulators and add/remove pumps to maintain feed water pressure; monitor flow rates, temperatures, and pressures of water, steam, air, gas, and oil.
Use trending software to ensure proper recording of boiler plant operations.
Frequently check water levels and steam pressure gauges to assure valves open/close and add or remove water or blow off steam to maintain safe operating levels.
Respond to boiler plant equipment or system malfunctions or medical center industrial system emergencies impacting boiler plant operations and coordinate with non‑boiler plant personnel, supervisors, and management regarding boiler plant concerns.
Inspect, monitor, test, evaluate, interpret, and troubleshoot complex boiler plant systems, subsystems, components, and devices using diagnostic instruments, specifications, manufacturer publications, drawings, diagrams, and schematics.
Identify operational deficiencies, malfunctions, and areas of substandard performance, interpret results, and determine appropriate corrective actions to maintain safe and adequate steam production.
Work schedule: 00:00‑08:00 Sunday‑Thursday or 16:00‑24:00 Tuesday‑Saturday (Initial 90 days: Monday‑Friday 8:00‑16:00).
Perform manual tasks that require moderate to heavy physical exertion (10‑80 lb) while lifting, transporting, carrying, pulling, and moving equipment and materials; use ladders, scaffolds, and platforms; handle confined spaces such as Morrison tubes and condensate return and deaerator tanks.
Perform tasks that require kneeling, stretching, pushing, pulling, crouching, stooping, bending, climbing, and walking/standing for long periods, including working in confined spaces.
Perform work from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, ground level, or in hard‑to‑reach places requiring climbing ladders and reaching over and under in cramped, awkward, tiring, and uncomfortable positions.
Use hand‑eye‑leg‑body coordination while performing assigned work.
