Job Responsibilities

Provide direct spiritual care, counseling, crisis intervention, and pastoral support to patients, families, and staff across all health system facilities.
Respond to referrals, assess spiritual needs, contact patients' faith leaders upon request, and ensure spiritual care aligns with medical treatment.
Serve as On‑Call Chaplain for medical and spiritual emergencies and collaborate with interdisciplinary care teams.
Perform religious rites or coordinate appropriate faith leaders; lead interdenominational worship services; schedule chapel functions and visiting clergy.
Participate in interdisciplinary committees and patient conferences; document all services in the electronic medical record per department policies.
Supervise Staff Chaplains and Pastoral Care Volunteers, overseeing assignments, coverage, and productivity.
Monitor professional development and certification needs of chaplaincy staff.
Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and orientation of new chaplaincy personnel.
Facilitate team meetings, daily huddles, and debriefs to support communication and continuous improvement.
Act as liaison between Staff Chaplains and department leadership, sharing updates, operational needs, and improvement opportunities.
Promote a team culture rooted in compassion, respect, and ethical practice.
Assist department leadership in managing the Spiritual Care budget, tracking spending, and ensuring responsible stewardship of resources.
Maintain inventory and order supplies required for Spiritual Care services.
Develop, coordinate, and maintain daily staffing schedules for adequate unit coverage.
Monitor time and attendance in alignment with MU Health System policies, ensuring accuracy for payroll.
Complete any unit/department‑specific duties as outlined in department documents.
Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in divinity, theology, or a related field.
Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) by APC, NACC, or equivalent within two (2) years as a condition of continued employment.
Three units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
Preferred Qualifications

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
Physical Demands

The position is very active and may require ambulating, remaining in a stationary position, and reaching or moving objects up to 25 lbs. The employee may routinely work 24/7 with rotating shifts, holidays, and inclement weather. Contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses is common.
