Organizational Unit Overview:
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a distinguished research and teaching facility of East Carolina University School of Medicine, consisting of approximately 50 people. This department provides an academic base for teacher‑scientists employed by the School of Medicine at East Carolina University in the disciplines of microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and other related disciplines. The department provides instruction to medical students and dental students, and provides instruction, guidance, and research experience to Ph.D. and M.S. students seeking degrees in microbiology and immunology. The department also offers a postdoctoral research training program. The department supports an array of faculty‑directed research programs, many of which are supported by extramural grants and/or contracts. The department provides service to the school, university, state, nation, and to the profession by the activities of faculty members on committees, study sections, in professional organizations, as consultants, and through other activities.
Job Duties:
The primary purpose of this position is to supervise students in the laboratory while supporting the management and operation of a research lab within the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the School of Medicine at East Carolina University. This position will be designing and conducting independent research, mentoring and directing graduate student research, presenting findings at laboratory and scientific meetings, and preparing manuscripts for publication in peer‑reviewed journals. The role also involves contributing to extramural grant applications and managing research activities across virology, immunology, biochemistry, animal husbandry, and molecular biology.
Key responsibilities include:
Plans experiments by organizing schedules, materials, and coordination based on the supervisor’s research directives and goals
Oversees and directs the work of 1–2 trainees or collaborators, guiding their research activities and training under the supervisor’s direction
Manages inventory by ordering supplies, tracking materials, maintaining records, and ensuring all lab members follow proper procedures
Reviews research work, provides feedback, monitors compliance with safety and organizational standards, and helps resolve issues with the supervisor
Leads training, supports research planning, directs personnel, contributes to hiring decisions, and advises the supervisor on performance and conduct
Minimum Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
None
