Job Summary

Utilizes scientific rationale to design, implement, and supervise exercise programming for patients with chronic diseases, conditions or physical limitations.

Provides physical conditioning, reconditioning, risk factor reduction, and education by prescribing, conducting, and evaluating cardiovascular and metabolic exercise programs under physician supervision.

Researches acute and chronic physiological adaptations to physical activity to understand disease impact before recommending exercise.

Analyzes a patient’s medical history to assess exercise risk and determine the optimal exercise and fitness regimen.

Performs fitness and stress tests with medical equipment; measures blood pressure, oxygen usage, heart rhythm and other key indicators.

Develops exercise programs to improve patients’ health; conducts investigations of muscular activity responses and adaptations.

Performs dietary intake assessments, counsels on modifications, and refers to dietitians as needed.

Depending on location, may perform 12‑lead EKGs/monitors.

Conducts weight‑management assessments, calculates BMI, develops weight‑loss goals, interprets lipid test values, and assists with diabetes management and tobacco‑cessation programs.

Creates risk‑reduction and behavior‑modification plans to minimize future chronic disease risk.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in exercise science, kinesiology, human performance, fitness, human biology or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience planning exercise programs for chronic disease patients; thorough understanding of physiological activity basis.

Ability to prescribe and instruct exercise per American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) guidelines.

ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CCEP) certification within two years of hire preferred.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 60 days of hire.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within first year of hire preferred.
