Summary
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs and assists with individual activities of daily living and certain treatments for patient care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) according to established policies, procedures and guidelines.

For casual positions:

casual employees have no regularly scheduled work hours, but must understand and agree to fulfill the minimum time commitments for as long as the position is held. These include: at least 48 hours per month with 24 of those hours worked on weekends, and an annual requirement of 24 hours worked on holidays.

Responsibilities

(50%)

Under the direction of the RN, prioritizes and organizes care of assigned patients, performing basic nurse aide skills as outlined in orientation, competencies, policy and procedures.

Documents on patient's chart, any treatments and pertinent observations. Provides report to team on tasks completed.

(25%)

Maintains a clean, safe and orderly unit.

Certifications and Licensures

Credential:

BLS – Basic Life Support.

Credential:

PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification.

Equivalent Experience:

Within 3 months of hire or transfer.

Credential Requirements:

Must hold an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification, or a current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification culminating in licensure in Michigan, or completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program culminating in licensure in Michigan, or successful completion of one semester of nursing clinical education by an accredited Registered Nurse program. For current PCTs with an expired CNA certification, EMT certification, or a lapsed LPN license, an opportunity to achieve an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification will be offered.

Required Education
High School Diploma or GED required.

Supports the mission, goals, policies and standards of nursing.

Medical Center and unit policies and work rules are recognized, supported and implemented.

Provides for the age‑specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures.

Emergency care/safety: Performs according to procedure in all medical center emergency situations.

Provides and ensures a safe and secure environment for the patient.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience, Training and Skills

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts clearly.

Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows; may be required to participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health.

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex or appropriate substitutes.

Can move freely around the facility, with or without an assisted device, and perform job functions as outlined in the job description.

Vision and hearing are necessary, with or without assisted devices.

Frequently required to sit, stand or walk for long periods; may require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow MyMichigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, work with others independently, maintain regular attendance and stay alert.

Includes handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling; may require repetitive movements regularly.

May need to lift or carry 21–50 lbs. 0–33% of the workday, 20 lbs. 34–66% of the workday, and 10 lbs. constantly 67–100% of the workday.
