Chemistry Instructor

Maine School of Science and Mathematics, Limestone, ME, United States

The Maine School of Science and Mathematics, Maine's only public STEM magnet school and one of a small number of public boarding schools in the country, invites applications for a full time Chemistry instructor to join our nationally recognized faculty beginning in August 2026.

Responsibilities

Teach sections of lab-based Chemistry (honors and/or AP level);

Offer a challenging, but relevant and student-centered, curriculum. The instructor has much autonomy in terms of class content and labs done. There is no ‘set curriculum’ to take over – the instructor must use their professional judgement as to how best to deliver the content, though course syllabi from previous years can be provided for guidance.

Design and teach a two-week January-Term course (instructor’s choice of topic);

Collaborate and coordinate with other STEM faculty to ensure class content fits within overall mission of MSSM;

Serve as an advisor to a small group of students (typically 5-6), acting as the primary point of contact between advisees’ parents and the School;

Act as an advisor/mentor to one student club or organization;

Participate fully in MSSM's living/learning community by attending campus events, offering office hours, attending meetings, and being available to meet the needs of our students and community.

Qualifications

A minimum of a Master's Degree in Chemistry or a related field;

“Doing science” is a critical part of MSSM science offerings, and the successful candidate should have at least three years of successful lab-based Chemistry teaching experience at the secondary and/or post-secondary level;

The ability to offer an academically challenging, but supportive, classroom experience;

Creative and cutting edge, with the ability to inspire students;

Excellent communication and organizational skills, and a willingness and desire to work with inquisitive and quirky high school students in a close-knit, residential community.
