Role Overview

The Probation Department seeks a self‑motivated, qualified professional to serve as a Juvenile Services Officer I. In this position the officer will be responsible for the temporary and safe supervision of juveniles in a custody setting, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Responsibilities

The officer will observe and report the behavior of juveniles, book minors into custody, and provide verbal de‑escalation as necessary. The officer will assist in maintaining the security of assigned areas by monitoring detainees, staff, and visitors through direct visual contact and audio/video monitoring systems. The officer will refer requests for information regarding detained youth to the assigned Deputy Probation Officer and coordinate the safe movement of youth to and from court.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of college coursework. Job‑related experience may qualify for the required education.
For Juvenile Services Officer I no additional experience is required.
Competencies
• Understanding of the Juvenile Justice System process and basic knowledge of interviewing, counseling, crisis intervention, institution safety, and security methods.
• Knowledge of developmental stages of minors and basic principles of applied psychology, including parenting skills and conflict resolution methods.
• Effective report writing and communication skills.
Physical Agility Test (PAT) Requirement

All candidates must pass all four events of the Physical Agility Test to proceed in the recruitment process. The events include:
Body lift – support a 150‑lb dummy for 30 seconds.
Body drag – drag a 150‑lb dummy 30 feet in 30 seconds.
Weighted agility run – walk or jog through a 150‑ft zigzag course carrying a 20‑lb weight, completing within 30 seconds.
550‑yard run – run 550 yards in 3 minutes or less.
