Piping Quality Control Lead Inspector

Tesla, Sparks, NV, United States

What To Expect
The Piping Quality Control Lead Inspector will proactively support the Quality Control Manager in guaranteeing that all piping related quality control activities (e.g., pipe fabrication, welding, coating, hydrostatic testing, supports, and field installation) conform to engineering designs, industry codes, and regulatory requirements. This position works closely with multiple functional teams to ensure safe, high quality piping installations. It demands solid technical judgment and creative problem‑solving skills to backstop field operations.

What You'll Do

Develop, review, and execute project specific piping QC plans, inspection and test plans, prepare inspection reports, and create weekly reports.

Perform surveillance and inspections of pipe fabrication, welding, coating, supports, pressure testing, and field installation, ensuring all work conforms to design specifications and approved procedures.

Generate and maintain accurate documentation—inspection reports, nonconformance reports (NCRs), weld maps, material certifications, and as‑built records—and promptly communicate findings to project stakeholders.

Oversee testing and laboratory activities, schedule field tests (e.g., hydrostatic pressure, NDT methods), and ensure calibrated equipment and accredited labs are used for material and coating verification.

Interpret design drawings and specifications and implement procedures for inspection activities.

Inspect and document acceptance of construction activities and installations, identify nonconforming conditions, and monitor corrective actions through closure.

Ensure all work being performed adheres to the approved ITPs and inspection test plans; maintain a database through established project standard computer applications.

What You'll Bring

Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.

Minimum of 8 years’ hands‑on experience as a piping quality control inspector on large‑scale industrial projects, including oil and gas facilities and complex chemical plant construction, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead capacity.

Demonstrated ability to read and interpret technical documents, communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors, and apply corrective action procedures to resolve nonconforming conditions.

Solid knowledge of the regulatory requirements that drive the quality program and familiarity with key construction codes (e.g., AWS, ASME).

Broad understanding of quality management principles and the ability to apply them through the full project lifecycle—including engineering, environmental compliance, procurement, construction, testing, operations, and commissioning.

Proficient knowledge in welding parameters and the qualification of welders.

Ability to work within a high‑performance, cross‑functional organization with extremely tight timelines and aggressive goals.
