Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)

Hours per Pay Period: 0.90 = 72 hours every two weeks (Non-Exempt)

Essential Job Functions

Supports and models behaviors consistent with the mission, vision, values and philosophy of Billings Clinic and the Emergency Department; performs functions within core competencies and “Minimum Specifications” set forth by the organization.

Responds in a timely, pleasant, efficient manner to the ED phone lines, using PSE guidelines; able to transfer calls and adhere to confidentiality (HIPAA) and patient rights requirements.

Greets patients upon entering ED, directs them to the next available triage room, and, if the chief complaint is emergent, immediately notifies the Triage Nurse.

Obtains and records vital signs, including height and weight, and places them on the whiteboard for RN charts and documents in the patient record per documentation guidelines.

Collects laboratory specimens as needed and performs point‑of‑care laboratory testing (glucometer) as listed in the job description.

Performs basic patient care, treatments, and documentation approved by the Physician or delegated by RN.

Assists patient’s activities during ED care, such as showers, ambulating, turning, crutches, walkers, wheelchair or stretcher transfers, and patient transports within the ED and facility.

Measures, records, and provides intake of food and fluid, including partial and total assist with feedings; records output from bodily functions and specified drainage devices.

Reports changes in patient condition, patient needs, and patient/visitor problems to the ED Physician and Primary Nurse or ED Charge Nurse.

Documents all care provided using appropriate ED documentation guidelines (CERNER FirstNet and/or ED paper chart).

Assists in preparing wounds for suturing (cleansing, irrigation, and setting up equipment).

Performs EKGs as required and places patients on cardiac monitors.

Assists in preparing patients for MD exams, such as changing them into gowns, providing blankets, ice, extremity elevations, etc.

Assists Diagnostic Imaging Technologists with X‑ray procedures and patient transfer to CT or US.

Assists in safety searches of designated patients as needed.

Institutes seizure precautions when applicable.

Assists MD/RN with gastric lavage as directed (ED only).

Assists ED physicians/RNs with tasks such as providing supplies and equipment.

Responds to patient call lights and reports requests to MD/RN.

Completes documentation following patient disposition (admission, discharge, transfer).

Sets up initial IV fluid bags, including priming tubing, adhering to aseptic technique, at the specific request of MD/RN.

Establishes peripheral IV lines upon MD’s request (applicable to PCT II with EMT and III only).

May establish ultrasound IVs after competency completion (Level II with EMT and Level III only).

If trained/competent in I/O, may insert under ED physician supervision (Level II with EMT and Level III only).

Maintains a clean patient environment by assisting with cleaning and maintenance of the waiting room, patient rooms, and the ED unit, including linen changes for occupied beds.

Knowledge and competence in all equipment cleaning.

Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment.

Is versed in aseptic and sterile technique.

Has visual acuity requirements.

Performs phlebotomy procedures per established ED and laboratory guidelines.

Applies and removes restraints according to Billings Clinic policy.

Assists with ambulance, helicopter, and flight transfers into the ED; knowledgeable about admission, transfer, and discharge regulations (EMTALA/HIPAA).

Understands disaster callback system for ED staff and emergency procedures; identifies and anticipates problems and safety issues, initiating appropriate action.

Has well‑developed computer skills, including documentation in the CERNER FirstNet program and use of Outlook for E‑mail communication.

Utilizes performance improvement principles to assess and improve patient care quality.

Takes responsibility for identifying own development needs; meets all system and departmental educational requirements; attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.

Refers more difficult problems to MD, RN, PCT II, and/or III.

Acts as an active participant in maintaining a safe work environment.

Has competency in the basic CNA and EMT patient‑care requirements, including:

Performing basic phlebotomy procedures to a variety of draw sites, specimen preparation.

Performing EKGs.

Providing wound care and dressings.

Performing splinting.

Measuring vital signs.

Conducting patient safety searches.

Complying with 1:1 policy.

May be cross‑trained to the Unit Clerk job role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of Billings Clinic policy and procedures, both departmental and organizational.

Understanding of regulatory standards and requirements.

Knowledge of Billings Clinic Corporate Compliance and Code of Business Conduct.

Customer service techniques and Personal Service Excellence (PSE) skills.

Ability to plan, assess, and provide patient‑care treatment within scope of practice.

Interpersonal skills necessary for interacting with patients, families, and physicians.

Demonstrates empathy and sensitivity to elicit patient cooperation and allay apprehensions.

Phlebotomy techniques and utilization of vacutainer and other equipment.

Performing EKGs.

Performing basic patient care and treatments within scope of certification/license.

Performing safety searches.

Performing computerized documentation per unit guidelines.

Critical thinking.

Proficiency in Patient Care II (with EMT or CMA) and III.

IV techniques and I/O insertion.

Incorporating population‑specific needs into all aspects of patient care and communications.

Time‑management concepts and effective use of time.

Clear and effective verbal and written communication.

Professional conduct when dealing with co‑workers, patients, and visitors.

Resourcefulness in managing simple to moderate complexity, prioritizing duties with assistance of nursing personnel.

Practice within the scope and level of certification/licensure.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

High school graduate or equivalent.

Medical training as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Certified Assistant (MA), EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic.

Experience
Level I

Preferred at least 6 months direct patient‑care experience (e.g., CNA, MA, or EMT) in an acute, ambulatory, or pre‑hospital setting; exposure to emergency or critical care preferred.

Professional development to proficiency in core patient‑care procedures and workflows for all age groups.

Level II

Minimum 1 year of direct patient‑care experience in an acute or emergency setting as PCT, CNA, MA, EMT with IV endorsement, or AEMT.

Demonstrated competency with IV starts, phlebotomy, wound care, and EKGs.

Proficient in PCT procedures and processes for all age groups.

Experience mentoring new staff or participating in skill validation preferred.

Level III

Minimum 2 years Emergency Department/work experience as a PCT, EMT, or MA.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize care, delegate appropriately, and support team efficiency.

Active participation in orientation, preceptorship, and quality improvement initiatives.

Certifications and Licenses

Current Montana license as Certified Nurse Assistant and/or EMT certification or college training in a health‑related field.

EMT certification with IV endorsement (Level II).

CPR Certification BLS for infant, child, and adult upon hire (ACLS for Level III).

Successful completion of Billings Clinic phlebotomy training upon hire.
