Job Description
REPORTS TO:

Principal

SUPERVISES:

May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

PURPOSE:

To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

MAJOR FUNCTION: Management of Instructional Time

– The teacher prepares materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson; starts the lesson quickly; gets students on task at the beginning and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Management of Student Behavior

– The teacher establishes rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, student verbal participation, classroom movement, and transitions; monitors behavior during all activities; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Presentation

– The teacher reviews previous material, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, presents concepts in an understandable manner, provides examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks students can complete successfully, asks appropriate questions, conducts lessons at a brisk pace, manages transitions, and summarizes the main points.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance

– The teacher sets clear, firm standards and due dates; circulates during class work; uses oral, written, and other work products to check progress; poses questions clearly and one at a time.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Feedback

– The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work, out‑of‑class assignments, and uses probing, repeating, or clues when needed to support learning.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Facilitating Instruction

– The teacher has a compatible instructional plan, uses diagnostic data, maintains accurate records, matches objectives, strategies, and assessment, and uses available resources to support the program.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Interacting Within the Educational Environment

– The teacher treats all students fairly, and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Performing Non‑Instructional Duties

– The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws and policies, follows a professional‑development plan, and demonstrates progress toward a current NC Educator’s License in the assigned content area.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Degree in education or a related field qualifying for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS

Physical Requirements:

Ability to use classroom equipment, handle light work, and stand/walk frequently.

Data Conception:

Compare, judge, and analyze data and characteristics.

Interpersonal Communication:

Convey information verbally and in writing, receive instructions from superiors.

Language Ability:

Read and prepare correspondence, reports, and instructional materials.

Intelligence:

Apply logical and scientific thinking, interpret technical instructions, and solve problems.

Verbal Aptitude:

Explain procedures, deliver information, and use professional terminology.

Numerical Aptitude:

Use mathematical formulas, calculations, and statistical principles.

Form/Spatial Aptitude:

Inspect items for proper dimensions.

Motor Coordination:

Coordinate hands and eyes rapidly with office equipment.

Manual Dexterity:

Handle various tools and office equipment.

Color Discrimination:

Differentiate colors and shades.

Interpersonal Temperament:

Handle people, work under stress, and manage emergencies.

Physical Communication:

Communicate via telephone, speak, and hear.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Monitor safety and well‑being of students during inclusive activities.

Motivate students.

Maintain a clean and orderly environment.

Perform clerical duties.

Maintain order and discipline in the classroom.

Operate office machines.

Maintain basic files and records.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Establish effective working relationships.
