Knight School Teacher - High School Social Science

Summary:

The Knight School Teacher will provide support for students working with virtual courses or SOL remediation. Students are working to earn a high school diploma. Students will attend class Monday-Thursday at Lugo-McGinness Academy. The position hours are 3:45 PM to 6:45 PM.

Essential Functions:

Facilitates the virtual learning (Edgenuity) instruction for students.

Instructs students in a program of studies that meets stated objectives and prepares students to master grade-level standards.

Works collaboratively with secondary teachers, administrators, parents, school and agency counselors, and related service providers in the overall educational plan for students enrolled at the Knight School.

Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize available time for instruction and actively engage students.

Fully supports and implements Social Emotional Learning, encouraging students to build self‑awareness, self‑management, and relationship skills.

Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom by providing positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modifying unacceptable behaviors.

Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.

Communicates regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress.

Participates in various student and parent activities.

Coordinates the development, implementation, and revision of the curriculum for alternative education with the LMA Administrator.

Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.

Meets with parents to support student needs and interventions for academic support.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Skills are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions; apply pertinent policies, regulations and/or laws; planning and managing activities; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; knowledge of basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information; compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions; specific knowledge to satisfactorily apply appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws, age appropriate activities, lesson plan requirements, community resources and stages of child development; ability to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events, gather, collate and/or classify data; use job‑related equipment; knowledge of and ability to apply best instructional practices in lessons; flexibility to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; operate equipment using standardized methods; ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; independent interpretation of guidelines; problem solving with equipment; ability to establish and maintain constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality, exhibiting tact and patience; working flexible hours.

Education and/or Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in an applicable field. A valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching License or eligibility for a license is required.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:

The usual and customary methods of performing the teaching position require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 24% sitting, 33% walking, and 43% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.

Evaluation:

The Knight School Teacher is evaluated by the Knight School Facilitator.
