Job Description
Reports To:

Principal

Supervises:

May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose:

To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
Major Function: Management of Instructional Time

The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.

Major Function: Management of Student Behavior

The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, talk, and movement; frequently monitors behavior during whole‑class, small‑group, seat‑work activities and transitions; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining students’ dignity.

Major Function: Instructional Presentation

The teacher begins each lesson with a review of previous materials, introduces the lesson, speaks fluently and precisely, presents concepts and language understandable to the students, provides relevant examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with a high rate of success, asks appropriate levels of questions, conducts the lesson at a brisk pace, and summarizes the main points at the end.

Major Function: Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance

The teacher maintains clear, firm and reasonable standards, circulates during class work to check all students’ performance, routinely uses oral, written, and other work products to check progress, and poses questions clearly and one at a time.

Major Function: Instructional Feedback

The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work to encourage growth, offers prompt feedback on assigned out‑of‑class work, affirms correct oral responses, and provides sustaining feedback after an incorrect or silent response.

Major Function: Facilitating Instruction

The teacher has an instructional plan aligned with school and system‑wide curricular goals; uses diagnostic information to develop and revise objectives; maintains accurate records; aligns objectives, learning strategies, assessment and student needs; uses available resources to support the instructional program.

Major Function: Interacting Within the Educational Environment

The teacher treats all students fairly and equitably and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.

Major Function: Performing Non‑Instructional Duties

The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, follows laws, policies, and regulations, and demonstrates growth in professional development.

Additional Job Functions
Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Training and Experience
Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Physical Requirements:

Must be able to use a variety of classroom tools and equipment, exert negligible force, and meet Light Work standards.

Data Conception:

Ability to compare and judge observable characteristics.

Interpersonal Communication:

Ability to speak and signal for information exchange; receive instructions from superiors.

Language Ability:

Ability to read correspondence, reports, handbooks; prepare simple reports and instructional materials.

Intelligence:

Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Verbal Aptitude:

Ability to record and deliver information and explain procedures in technical or professional language.

Numerical Aptitude:

Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, perform basic operations, and apply statistical principles.

Form/Spatial Aptitude:

Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions.

Motor Coordination:

Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately with office equipment.

Manual Dexterity:

Ability to handle office equipment and hand tools; minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination:

Ability to differentiate colors and shades.

Interpersonal Temperament:

Ability to handle people beyond basic instructions; adapt under stress.

Physical Communication:

Ability to talk and hear; communicate via telephone.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to monitor safety and well-being of students, motivate students, maintain a clean environment, perform clerical duties, maintain order and discipline, operate common office machines, maintain files and records, understand and follow written instructions, and establish effective working relationships.
