QUALIFICATIONS

Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.

Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned major sport(s).

Must possess substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and concurrently seek new theories and procedures relevant to the field.

Must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.

REPORTS TO
The head coach & athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

JOB GOAL

Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training required for individual and team success.

Demonstrate behaviors that foster socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, confidence, and pride.

Continuously upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.

GENERAL

The success of athletic programs significantly influences community perception; public exposure and pressure for performance must not override good sportsmanship and mental health.

The position includes unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process.

In cases not specifically covered, the coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the USD 214‑Ulysses School Board of Education and ensure their implementation across the sports program staff.

Understand existing system, state, and league regulations; implement and interpret them consistently for staff.

Understand proper administrative command and refer all requests or grievances through appropriate channels; attend all required public, staff, and departmental meetings.

STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain discipline, address grievances, and promote morale and cooperation.

Perform additional duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

Assist the head coach with scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.

Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices, adhere to facility use times, and coordinate with maintenance and school employees.

Provide documentation to meet state and system requirements for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.

Ensure proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment.

Advise the athletic director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Serve as a mentor, promoting character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

Monitor student athlete grades and conduct.

Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards at all practices, games, and travel.

Teach training rules and any unique sport regulations to each participant.

Initiate injury, medical attention, and emergency policies.

Complete paperwork for disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submit within 24 hours.

Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.

Determine discipline procedures and engage parents regarding eligibility.

Assist athletes in college or advanced educational selection.

FINANCE AND EQUIPMENT

Accountable for all equipment; collect costs for lost or unreturned items.

Arrange issuance, storage, and reconditioning of equipment; submit annual inventory and records.

Mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.

Monitor equipment rooms and coach offices; authorize access and requisition.

Permit athletes to use authorized areas at appropriate times.

Check locker rooms before and after practices and games; ensure cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.

Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving if custodians are not on duty.

Instill respect for equipment and school property.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.

Promote the sport within the school by recruiting non‑participating athletes; promote externally through media, little league programs, or other feasible methods.

Ensure the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.

Maintain positive relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.

Present information to media regarding schedules, tournaments, and results.
