Qualifications

:

Minimum qualifications include a valid Iowa teaching certificate, a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in education and proper endorsements.

Must hold or be willing to obtain BD/LD and ID endorsements.

Job Summary

The special education teacher ensures that individualized programs and curriculum are implemented in a way that maximizes student learning experiences for students with disabilities.

The teacher is responsible for the supervision, evaluation, and progress monitoring of all students within their teaching assignment.

Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the teacher will demonstrate a strong commitment to planning for the improvement of student achievement and individualized student success.

The district may temporarily split this position between buildings due to roster sizes.

Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Develop and maintain long-range and daily instructional plans aligned with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), district curriculum, and state guidelines.

Prepare course objectives and instructional outlines that meet diverse learning needs through differentiation and accommodations.

Utilize instructional time effectively to meet individualized student goals.

Provide specially designed instruction in academic, behavioral, and functional skill areas.

Implement and monitor IEPs, including goal tracking, progress monitoring, and documentation in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and ensure appropriate accommodations and modifications are in place.

Communicate regularly with parents/guardians through conferences and other means regarding student progress and IEP updates.

Use a variety of instructional strategies such as small group instruction, direct instruction, modeling, guided practice, behavioral interventions, and assistive technology.

Utilize a variety of formative and summative assessments to evaluate student academic, behavioral, and social growth.

Maintain accurate records for attendance, IEP documentation, evaluations, progress reports, discipline records, and other required documentation in JMC or other district systems.

Collaborate with staff to address students’ social, emotional, behavioral, and academic needs.

Attend scheduled professional development and maintain professional competence through ongoing learning and growth, particularly in special education practices.

Participate in curriculum development and program improvement initiatives.

Administer required assessments in accordance with district and state guidelines.

Maintain a positive image of the district within the community.
