Description
The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. NYPL’s neighborhood libraries in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island—many of which date to Andrew Carnegie’s visionary philanthropy at the turn of the 20th century—are being transformed into true centers of educational innovation and service, and vital community hubs that provide far more than just free books and materials.
NYPL is seeking an Assistant Library Maintainer to maintain and repair library building systems and equipment to provide an environment that is clean, safe and comfortable for our Library users and employees.
Key Responsibilities
Under the direction of a Supervising Maintainer, the Assistant Maintainer:
Performs minor repairs to the lighting equipment, including the relamping and ballast replacement of all electrical fixtures
Performs elementary preventative maintenance work on mechanical equipment, air conditioning, plumbing, carpentry, and painting.
May be assigned to work in any trade as required
May be assigned to work in Manhattan, Staten Island, Bronx, and Long Island City locations.
Performs related duties as required
Skills Knowledge & Expertise
Required Education and Certifications
High school diploma or equivalent required
Valid Driver’s License and clear driving record
Required Experience
Experience and education with electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems
Experience in building trades in and in the operation and maintenance of large scale heating, air conditioning (Large Central Units and Package Units), elevator, electrical, and plumbing systems
Required Skills
Knowledge and experience in maintenance and repairs of mechanical and electrical systems
Successfully demonstrated experience in all phases of building maintenance, including painting, plumbing, and/or carpentry.
Good oral and written communication skills
Ability to set up work from scaffolds and ladders
Basic knowledge of computers
Must pass a physical examination
