Summary
Under the general supervision of the school principal, the physical education teacher is the primary instructional delivery for student health, wellness, fitness, and growth. The educator collaborates with school team members and provides strategies and supports for increasing student movement and fitness within the regular classroom.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions
Exhibits a comprehensive understanding of the content, discipline, and related pedagogy as demonstrated through the quality of lesson design and facilitation and the ability to align instruction with Iowa Physical Education Standards, College and Career Readiness Standards, and 21st Century Skills.
Demonstrates motivation and enthusiasm with a genuine passion for teaching all learners.
Demonstrates the ability to create a student‑centered classroom.
Facilitates students' physical, cognitive, social, and emotional learning through lessons designed to sequentially develop skills appropriate to their ability and confidence levels.
Provides engaging, fun, and effective instruction that helps build a health and wellness foundation for students.
Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness using the Iowa Core Standards.
Implements Iowa Core Standards with rigor, purpose, and planning.
Provides maximum participation for all students; differentiates as needed to ensure all students experience success.
Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
Develops engaging and effective lesson plans and supplementary materials.
Provides ongoing formative feedback to students.
Demonstrates a growth mindset individually and supports this development with all students.
Communicates developmentally appropriate ways through a humane, sensitive approach that clearly communicates that every student, regardless of ability, can succeed and will benefit from a physically active, healthy lifestyle.
Implements and supports district and school‑wide programs to include Professional Learning Communities and RULER.
Collaborates with school team members in professional learning teams, providing ideas and support to increase health and wellness, movement, and activity within the classroom.
Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in physical education.
Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment, field, and pool areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
Evaluates academic and social growth of students and keeps appropriate records to include report cards, attendance records, checklists, and other record‑keeping activities as appropriate by level and assigned by supervisor.
Communicates with parents, school counselors, and administrators on student progress.
Focuses on making learning visible through effective student engagement.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Valid Iowa teaching license, K‑8 or 5‑12 physical education endorsement required.
Demonstrated competency in the subject area(s) assigned.
