Position: Teacher Assistant, Sub Bus Driver at Norris S. Childers Elementary School
Type: Permanent / full‑time / 10‑month school year / 6 hours per day
Benefits: paid holidays, sick leave, annual leave, retirement, hospitalization insurance (benefit‑eligible)
Dual‑employment: meets responsibilities of both roles
Reports to: Classroom Teacher, Principal, or Assistant Principal
Salary: Teacher Assistant – Grade 59 ($16.48 – $22.23 per hour); Sub Bus Driver – Grade 58 ($15.00 – $17.62 per hour)
Starting date: August 6, 2026
Job Description
Provide direct support to students and teachers in the classroom.
Work one‑on‑one with students to assist with academics, behavioral challenges, and personal/self‑help skills.
Lead small‑group activities and reinforce teacher‑directed lessons.
Assist teachers with housekeeping, clerical tasks, and student care needs.
Support classroom environment to ensure high‑quality instruction and student success.
Operate a school bus to safely transport students to and from school and activities.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Pass drug test, background check, and TB test prior to employment.
Meet one of the following ESSA requirements:
Associate’s degree or higher in any area.
30 semester hours of college coursework.
Passing scores on WorkKeys Test (Workplace Documents: Level 4+, Applied Math: Level 4+, Business Writing: Level 3+).
Valid driver’s license and driving record qualifying for a North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License/NCCDL.
Ability to obtain and maintain bus driver certification and comply with all transportation safety regulations.
Knowledge of effective methods for working with students and supporting instruction.
Physical ability: lift up to 100 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, 20 lbs constantly.
Responsibilities
Support classroom teachers in delivering high‑quality instruction.
Provide individualized and small‑group support to students.
Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and on field trips.
Assist with clerical, organizational, and instructional preparation tasks.
Ensure student safety, discipline, and engagement in all learning environments.
Operate a school bus, perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections, and maintain discipline and safety on the bus.
Additional Duties
Serve as substitute teacher or testing proctor as assigned.
Attend workshops and professional development sessions.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the teacher, principal, or supervisor.
